3 CONSERVATION BEGINS HERE  Article in 1955 Harpers Magazine prompted senior at Vassar College to write thesis to get students to save parks  Took her two years to get SCA off the ground; first crews took place in 1957, Olympic and Grand Teton National Parks  Over 50 years and over 60,000 alum later, SCA is still going strong Liz Titus Putnum SCA History

5 CONSERVATION BEGINS HERE National Park Service (NPS) US Fish and Wildlife Service US Forest Service Bureau of Land Management Army Corps of Engineers And various state, national, local, and nonprofit agencies!

6 CONSERVATION BEGINS HERE Youth Ages: 15-19 1. Community Crews 2. School year program 3. National Crews Young Adult Ages: 18 and older 1. Internships 2. Corps Leader Ages: 21 and older 1. Community Crew Leader 2. National Crew Leader 3. Project Leader

7 CONSERVATION BEGINS HERE Community Program: 6-7 week summer program, students do conservation projects in their own communities in cities nationwide, commuting CLC (Conservation Leadership Corps): school year program, students participate in weekend projects in their own communities in cities nationwide Both are groups of 6-10 members with two qualified leaders Fill out an application for that specific city and contact coordinator in that city with questions

8 CONSERVATION BEGINS HERE Tuition-free, three-four week summer program Students from across the country camp together and participate in conservation projects, either frontcountry or backcountry or camping Group of six-eight students with two qualified crew leaders Participate in recreation trip at the end Fill out general high school application and will be assigned specific location if selected

9 CONSERVATION BEGINS HERE Over 1700 expense-paid internship and corps opportunities each year Found nationwide, all 50 states Areas include trail work, visitor services, fisheries, education, habitat restoration, and other conservation related fields Online database lists all open opportunities Fill out one application and apply to multiple internships at once

10 CONSERVATION BEGINS HERE Community crew leader: train & supervise a crew of 10 local high school students; work on conservation projects in urban areas; apply to work in specific city National crew leader: lead & mentor a front country or backcountry crew of 6-8 high school students from all over the US for 21-35 days; apply and if selected, assigned specific location Must be over 21; both require experience working with youth Community crew leader: CPR certification National crew leader: WFR or WFA certification

11 CONSERVATION BEGINS HERE Lead, teach & mentor a group of 2-6 Corps members, ages 18-26 addressing urgent conservation issues Program lengths range from 3-12 months, positions available year- round Require specific backgrounds, such as WFR, trail work, supervision, and must be over 21 Apply to specific program from “SCA Employment” page
