What is Title I? Prepared by the Fairfax County Public Schools Title I office and Lorton Station ES

Federal grant Part of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) (also known as “No Child Left Behind”) Goal: To ensure that all students meet challenging state academic standards.

How are schools selected? Schools are chosen based on the percent of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch Schools are served in order, beginning with the school with the highest percent of low-income students

What are the objectives of Title I in FCPS ? Improve Language Arts skills Develop Math skills and concepts Promote critical thinking and problem solving skills Encourage family involvement in the education of children

How does the Priority School Initiative impact Title I Schools ? 15 schools

Priority Schools Title I Schools Schools design a 90 day plan with a focus on students meeting benchmarks. Funding for an instructional coach to ensure a high degree of implementation of Professional Learning Communities. Funding for additional time for teacher learning with respect to best practices in teaching and learning, data analysis, or other components of professional learning communities. Schools design a School wide Plan that focuses on raising the level of achievement for all students. Funding for Language Arts and Math teachers to work with students in classrooms and small groups. Funding to support teacher development of content knowledge to raise student achievement and close achievement gaps. Ongoing professional development is focused on research-based best instructional practices.

In a Title I schoolwide school, all students benefit from Title I resources.

Family Involvement is an important part of the Title I program and is required by the law. How can parents help?

Attend parent programs to learn ways to help children at home with reading and writing.

Come to school programs to learn ways to practice math skills at home.

Supervise homework and help children develop good work habits.

Meet with your child’s teachers to discuss your child’s progress.

Read with your child every day.

Practice math skills at home.

Also… Read and support your School-Home Compact Read the Title I Parents Matter Newsletter Volunteer to be a Title I District Advisory Council representative from your school Attend Title I District Advisory Council meetings The District Advisory Council (DAC) is a county organization with representatives from each Title I school. DAC collaborates with Title I staff to plan, implement, and evaluate the Title I program. DAC meetings are held five times a year. All parents are invited to attend DAC meetings.

Additional ways Title I money supports Fairfax County Schools

Family Field Trips Title I office funds family field trips for nine to ten schools receiving Title I funding. During these field trips families visit the one of the following Smithsonian museums: the National Gallery of Art, the Air and Space Museum, or the National Museum of Natural History. Family

Partners In Print Events One frequently used resource for these events is Partners In Print. During Partners In Print (PIP) evening events, families participate in various literacy activities together and parents learn strategies for supporting literacy at home. Over the years, PIP events have focused on supporting students in pre-Kindergarten through second grade. Partners In Print Events
