7 Strategic Initiatives Bridging the Pacific Rim Community through Education, Research and Enterprise APRU Enterprise Conference in 2003 Research Projects APRU Enterprise Provides a platform to promote best entrepreneurial programs and practices, as well as launch innovations To address issues of strategic importance through sharing of best practices Each study culminates in a research workshop where findings are shared 2 research projects to-date: –Technology Transfer and Wealth Creation –Internationalization of APRU Universities

8 Network Collaboration Bridging the Pacific Rim Community through Education, Research and Enterprise APRUNet and Distance Learning Networking platforms created to facilitate development of advanced Internet capabilities and professional development Distance Learning and the Internet (DLI) Conference is a flagship activity Core group of APRUNet representatives drives network collaboration The 5 th Distance Learning and the Internet conference held in Tsinghua University

9 International Programs Bridging the Pacific Rim Community through Education, Research and Enterprise APRU Fellows on a field trip to Lake Biwa in Osaka Fellows Program Annual two-week program that brings together junior faculty To promote knowledge exchange and build cross-national, multidisciplinary collaboration Involves scholarly discussions with synchronized field immersion experiences Held across two APRU member economies

10 International Programs Bridging the Pacific Rim Community through Education, Research and Enterprise Doctoral Students Conference Annual conference driven by APRU Doctoral Students Network To encourage scholarly research in the Pacific Rim To provide an international platform for students to share and present their research Research Symposiums Specialized research symposiums provide international platform to facilitate exchange of knowledge and professional development of APRU researchers

11 APRU Senior Staff Meeting (SSM) Arose from a suggestion by APRU presidents at 2002 Annual Presidents Meeting Formation of a core group of dedicated senior staff to move APRU forward Annual governance meeting where senior staff of APRU universities review development and implementation of APRU initiatives Bridging the Pacific Rim Community through Education, Research and Enterprise

12 1 st APRU Senior Staff Meeting Inaugural meeting at Stanford from April 13-15, 2004 Attended by 36 senior staff from 25 APRU Universities Review of APRU programs and initiatives Break-out discussion: Role of Senior Staff and How APRU Can Be More Effective Bridging the Pacific Rim Community through Education, Research and Enterprise APRU senior staff at the inaugural meeting at Stanford

13 SSM Objectives and Role of Senior Staff Drive the development and implementation of APRU programs and initiatives Review effectiveness of APRU programs and initiatives Play an active role in championing APRU initiatives Assist in identifying areas and action items which presidents could focus on in their discussions Work closely to further develop and enhance APRU’s effectiveness as a network Bridging the Pacific Rim Community through Education, Research and Enterprise

14 APRU Working Groups Two working groups formed following 1 st SSM – Student Mobility – Thematic Conferences Bridging the Pacific Rim Community through Education, Research and Enterprise Comprise senior staff from geographically representative APRU universities

15 2 nd SSM Working groups to present proposals on student mobility and thematic conference Senior staff to discuss these proposals and agree on next steps Senior staff will also review entire spectrum of APRU programs and initiatives Proposals for new initiatives are welcome to be discussed Senior staff to take leading role in spearheading, evaluating APRU initiatives Bridging the Pacific Rim Community through Education, Research and Enterprise
