2. Zagreb 5 June 2014 About HPH The International Network of Health Promoting Hospitals & Health Services (HPH) was initiated by WHO in the 90- ies. Today, it consists of 36 National / Regional HPH Networks, each comprised of at least 3 member hospitals / health services. In addition, there are also many individual hospitals and health service members in areas yet without a National / Regional Network. In total, the International HPH Network is made up of more than 900 hospital and health service members in 41 countries.

3. Zagreb 5 June 2014 As HPH - originally a European initiative, 26 of these countries are European. Today, however, HPH is truly global one of the fastest growing membership areas is Asia – with members in countries like Republic of Korea, Singapore, China, Japan, Thailand and Indonesia.

4. Zagreb 5 June 2014 The WHO/HPH Memorandum of Understanding In 2008, HPH had its official Constitution signed by General Assembly and was thus constituted as its own legal entity under Swiss law. Simultaneously, work on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between HPH and WHO was initiated. In December 2010, the MoU was finalised and signed by the RD of WHO Europe, Zsuzsanna Jakab and the HPH Governance Board. The reason WHO Europe was signatory - coordination with HPH resides with the Europe Office, even though HPH has become global.

Zagreb 5 June 2014 HRH development Focus for current strategic HPH development is South Eastern Europe HPH has an official Memorandum of Understanding with the South Eastern Europe Health Network (SEEHN). Our hope and ambition that many new networks and memberships will form in the SEEHN countries

7. Zagreb 5 June 2014 HPH Vision The HPH Vision is to increase the contribution of hospitals and health services to better health gain through health promotion, supported by growth in sustainable HPH Networks as partners of WHO.

Zagreb 5 June 2014 The Goal of HPH To iimprove the quality of health care, the relationship between hospitals/health services, the community and the environment, as well as the conditions for and satisfaction of patients, relatives and staff ( sometimes largest employers 30 000 hospitals in EURO - 3% of total workforce /Rebro/). This is done by incorporating the concepts, values, strategies and standards / indicators of Health Promotion - as described by WHO. HPH contributes to WHO in many areas such as H2020 and EAP-PHS etc. (reflected in current Global HPH Strategy).

Zagreb 5 June 2014 4 priority areas The General Assembly has decided on 4 priority areas for 2013-2015, which are directly aligned to the WHO Health 2020 (Ten Essential Public Health Operations ) and the UN/WHO Declaration on Prevention and Control of NCD and : The priorities are: 1. Implementing WHO-HPH standards and indicators for health promotion in hospitals & health services, including health protection, patient safety and rehabilitation; 2. Training and education to assure competence and capacity building for health promotion in hospitals and health services; 3. Communication and advocacy for health promotion in hospital and health services, including HPH growth; 4. Advancement of clinical health promotion research to inform policy and practice.

Zagreb 5 June 2014 Health promoting hospitals Health promoting hospitals provide: high quality comprehensive medical and nursing services develops a corporate identity that embraces the aims of health promotion develops a health promoting organizational structure and culture / including active, participatory roles for patients and all members of staff/ develops itself into a health promoting physical environment Actively cooperates with its community.

14. Zagreb 5 June 2014 WHO CCs in Denmark - functions as International HPH Secretariat + WHO CC in Austria arranges 2 - 3 HPH country seminars (“summer schools”). The schools are a great forum for learning and exchanging knowledge and experience And HPH is also liaising with SEEHN countries for the prospects of hosting a 2016 or 2017 international HPH conference in one of the SEEHN member countries.

Zagreb 5 June 2014 Participation in the WHO Health Promoting Hospitals Network Hospitals that want to belong to the WHO Health Promoting Hospitals Network: 1. should endorse the fundamental principles and strategies for implementation of the Vienna Recommendations; 2. should belong to the national/regional network in the countries where such a networks exist (hospitals in countries without such networks should apply directly to the international coordinating institution); 3. should comply with the rules and regulations established at the international and national/regional levels by the members of the international network, the WHO and the international coordinating institution.

16. Zagreb 5 June 2014 There will be three types of membership: 1. members of the national/regional networks 2. individual members from countries where no national/regional network exists 3. members of thematic networks
