Conversion Activity 8/22/13

Bellwork What is scientific notation? It is a way to write very large or very small numbers in a compact way

Agenda Check off homework Bellwork Go over homework Start conversion activity

Scientific Notation The coefficient identifies the amount of sig. figs.

Metric / English Conversions You will be given a set of conversion factors, common ones are: 1 in. (inch) = 2.54 cm (centimeters) 1 ft (foot) = m (meters) 1 mile = 1.61 km (kilometers) 1 oz (ounce) = g (grams) 1 lb (pound) = 454 g (grams) 1 qt (quart) = L (liters)

Calculating Speed

Throwing a ball across the room: distance = 14.5 m time = s speed = 32.2 m/s

Converting m/s to km/hr Convert 32.2 m/s to km/hr Answer: 116 km/hr

Converting km/hr to mph Convert 116 km/hr to mile/hr Answer: 72.0 mile/hr

Conversion Activity 8/22/13

Pre-Lab Copy down the data table

Title: Activity / Distance (m) Time 1 (s) Time 2 (s) Time 3 (s) Time 4 (s) Time 5 (s)

Collecting Data IMPORTANT!!! When measuring be as precise as you can be!!! Distances should be in meters (Oh no! I have to convert!)

Class Wrap-Up Please leave the rulers on the desks Lab tables as you found them Hand back lab procedures (to the basket at the end of class) Homework: # due tomorrow

Activities: Ball rolling down ramp (measure the length of the ramp) Tennis ball drop (measure the height of the table) Walking pace (5.00 m) Jogging pace (10.0 m) Your own activity that can be measured.

Procedure: Do each of the five activities and take five time trials for each one and record in the data table. Record all sig. figs. that are given on the stopwatch 0:00.00 is (min):(sec).(1/100 sec)

Conversion Activity (Day 2) 8/23/13

Bellwork Where do you prefer to sit in this class?

After Data Collection Return to the desks Calculate average time Calculate average speed Convert the 10 Dominoes: 5 (total): m/s to km/hr5 (total): m/s to km/hr 5 (total): km/hr to mile/hr5 (total): km/hr to mile/hr Graph follow up questions Turn in activity

Graph: NOTE: This will be one of the only times that we will use a bar graph. In physics we will be using x-y plot graphs

Questions and Graph: (Answer in complete sentences.) Graph: Transfer the average speed (mile/hr) for the activities to a bar graph. In which activities was the average speed of the object the fastest? In which activities was the average speed of the object the slowest? In which activities did the speed of the object stay the same over the distance traveled? In which activities did the speed of the object change over the distance traveled? What are three different Olympic events that use speed to determine the gold medalist? What two measurements are needed to find the average speed?
