COSNet Forum Nov 2006 ANU, ACT DSTO Node Report AM Grisogono

statistics New node – early Oct 2006 – 5 members, but many more potential members within DSTO DSTO has been very active in CAS research and applications for defence for over 3 years. Highlights: –CAS4D workshops in 2004 and 2005 –Full day tutorials for Army, SETE –International TTCP Symposium July 2006 –>30 publications –Started as small blue sky research, now high profile and well- supported by senior defence clients and DSTO –Many international and national research linkages –Now have new Action Group on CAS for Defence for 3 next years

intelligent context- appropriate behaviour resilience to shocks robust to perturbations flexible responses agility – rapid change of tack innovation system learns success tends to increase Why study them? CAS: complex systems that adapt –natural living systems, engineered systems and hybrid sociotechnical systems –individual systems, and populations of systems –open systems that exist in a context and interact with it through porous boundaries To exploit the power of adaptation to: –generate useful new characteristics (design), –solve complex problems, –develop comparative advantage over competing systems –develop effective cooperative strategies between systems Defence systems and operations are complex DSTO is interested in … variation interaction feedback success-linked selection

Complex (Adaptive) Systems – from science to applications EngineeringFundamental Theory Source disciplines biological sciences information sciences cognitive sciences organisational sciences evolutionary economics physical sciences math & computing social sciences Applications designing systems and operations for robustness engendering more adaptivity joint, coalition and interagency ops decision support in complex situations influencing behaviour of others systems empowering human adaptivity Understand Fundamental Processes in Complex Systems Causality and Influenceability in Complex Systems Design and Management Principles for Complex Systems Methodologies, Guidelines, Tools and Techniques Complex Systems Enginering SoS Integration Complex Systems Management Complex Operations Human Integration Complex Systems Science
