ASL 101: L EARNING A DVANCED S QUAD L EADER Session 5: Fire Combat with Russ Gifford

ASL 101: Fire Combat We’ll learn about: firing Infantry units and Squad Weapons firing Infantry units and Squad Weapons using the Infantry Fire Table using the Infantry Fire Table TEMs, DRMs TEMs, DRMs fire groups fire groups Goals for this Session

ASL 101: Fire Combat You will also learn about results of fire combat: Morale Checks Morale Checks Pin Task Checks (PTC) Pin Task Checks (PTC) differences between Prep fire, Defensive Fire, and Advancing Fire differences between Prep fire, Defensive Fire, and Advancing Fire Goals for This Session

ASL 101: Fire Combat In ASL, fire happens only in certain phases in each player turn. The ATTACKER can fire in: Prep Fire Phase Prep Fire Phase Advancing Fire Phase Advancing Fire Phase Player turn: Rally Phase Prep Fire Phase Movement Phase Defensive First Fire Defensive Fire Phase Defensive Fire Phase Advancing Fire Phase Rout Phase Advance Phase Close Combat Phase

ASL 101: Fire Combat In ASL, fire happens only in certain phases in each player turn. The DEFENDER can fire in: Defensive First Fire Phase (as the ATTACKER moves) Defensive First Fire Phase (as the ATTACKER moves) Defensive Fire Phase Defensive Fire Phase Player turn: Rally Phase Prep Fire Phase Movement Phase Defensive First Fire Defensive Fire Phase Defensive Fire Phase Advancing Fire Phase Rout Phase Advance Phase Close Combat Phase

ASL 101: Fire Combat Infantry Squad Firepower Firepower Fire Power and Range MMC’s have their inherent firepower listed on their counters.

ASL 101: Fire Combat Infantry Squad Firepower Firepower Normal Range Normal Range Fire Power and Range MMC’s use this FP at any target in normal range.

ASL 101: Fire Combat Infantry Squad Firepower Firepower Normal Range Normal Range Fire Power and Range MMC’s use this FP at any target in normal range. Or if they fire beyond their normal range, they fire half their FP.

ASL 101: Fire Combat Infantry Squad Firepower Firepower Normal Range Normal Range Fire Power and Range MMC’s use this FP at any target in normal range. Or if they fire beyond their normal range, they fire half their FP. Maximum distance is twice their normal range.

ASL 101: Fire Combat Infantry Squad Firepower Firepower Normal Range Normal Range Fire Power and Range MMC’s use this FP at any target in normal range. FP is doubled at adjacent targets!

ASL 101: Fire Combat Personnel Units and Combat Fire: Infantry units may fire in any direction Infantry units may fire in any direction FP strength depends on range FP strength depends on range Inherent FP may not be spilt between targets (EXC: some units have spray fire) Inherent FP may not be spilt between targets (EXC: some units have spray fire) Notes on Firing

ASL 101: Fire Combat Personnel Units and Combat Fire: FP may be grouped. Units must be ADJACENT to form a fire group. FP may be grouped. Units must be ADJACENT to form a fire group. Infantry units may fire a SW at the same target, or at a separate target. Infantry units may fire a SW at the same target, or at a separate target. Notes on Firing

ASL 101: Weapons Squad Weapons FP Normal Range Unit Type ROF SW’s work the same way: But they must be possessed by a personnel unit to be fired!

ASL 101: Fire Combat Personnel Units and Combat Fire: FP strength depends on other factors, too: halved if firing unit moved this turn halved if firing unit moved this turn halved if firing Area Fire (target concealed or hidden) halved if firing Area Fire (target concealed or hidden) halved if firing unit is pinned halved if firing unit is pinned halved if firing unit marked with First Fire counter halved if firing unit marked with First Fire counter Other Fire Combat Multipliers

ASL 101: Fire Combat Example of Fire Can these units fire at each other? Notice: The 467 is on the second level!

ASL 101: Fire Combat Example of Fire Can these units fire at each other? Yes! The range is 6 hexes, so the FP is ?

ASL 101: Fire Combat Terrain type TEM is listed on the Chapter B Terrain Chart Terrain Effects Modifier

ASL 101: Fire Combat Example of Fire German Prep Fire Phase: What is the TEM? 4 FP + 1 TEM

ASL 101: Fire Combat Reading the IFT How do we calculate the results? DR :7 + 1 = 8 On the 4 FP column 8 = No effect

ASL 101: Fire Combat Example of Fire German Prep Fire Phase: DR :7 + 1 On the 4 FP column = No effect

ASL 101: Fire Combat Example of Fire If instead there were two units and they fire grouped? The total FP would be…?

ASL 101: Fire Combat Example of Fire If instead there were two units and they fire grouped? The total FP would be…? 6 FP Why? Range for second unit is 7 hexes, so his FP is halved!

ASL 101: Fire Combat Example of Fire If the fire group had an LMG? The total FP would be…? 9 FP + 1 TEM

ASL 101: Fire Combat Example of Fire How do we calculate the results? DR of 7, + 1 for the TEM is final DR of 8. 8 on the 8 FP column (there is no 9 FP column) is an NMC !

ASL 101: Fire Combat Example of Fire The result would be an ‘NMC’ (and place Prep Fire markers.) NMC Why no Prep Fire marker on the LMG?

ASL 101: Fire Combat Example of Fire The LMG retained its Rate of Fire with a colored die of ‘1’

ASL 101: Fire Combat As a result of fire, units may have to see if they are willing to stand the punishment they are receiving. We call this a ‘morale check.’ This is a dice roll modified by the number on the fire chart (0, +1, +2, etc) Morale Checks

ASL 101: Fire Combat Reading the IFT NMC = +0, 1MC = +1, 2MC = +2, etc.

ASL 101: Fire Combat When the unit rolls the MC: If the final DR < their morale, there is no effect. (They ‘passed.’)If the final DR < their morale, there is no effect. (They ‘passed.’) If it is > their morale, they break. (Flip the counter, place DM counter.)If it is > their morale, they break. (Flip the counter, place DM counter.) If it is equal to their morale, they pinned. (Place PIN counter.)If it is equal to their morale, they pinned. (Place PIN counter.) Morale Checks

ASL 101: Fire Combat Example of Fire On an NMC, what DR would PIN the 747? A MC DR of ‘7’ would pin the unit.

ASL 101: Fire Combat Example of Fire Since the LMG has ROF, can it fire again? Yes! At the same target - or any other target.

ASL 101: Fire Combat Example of Fire What would the German player need to roll to get a 1MC?

ASL 101: Fire Combat Example of Fire To get a 1MC with a 3 FP LMG, that’s on the 2 FP column. The final DR would need to be 3 or 4 – so what would the original DR need to be? 3, with a +1 TEM is final DR of 4.

ASL 101: Fire Combat Example of Fire If the original DR was 3 with a colored 2, the LMG would lose ROF. 1MC

ASL 101: Fire Combat Example of Fire But what happens now if the 747 rolls a “7” on the morale check? 1MC

ASL 101: Fire Combat Example of Fire If the original MC DR is 7, add 1 (for 1MC) means the 747 will break! 1MC

ASL 101: Fire Combat Personnel Units and Combat Fire: FP strength depends on range: FP at normal range? FP at normal range? FP beyond normal range? FP beyond normal range? How far may a unit fire? How far may a unit fire? FP at adjacent targets? FP at adjacent targets? FP at in-hex targets (rare occurrence)? FP at in-hex targets (rare occurrence)? Fire Combat Rules Quiz

ASL 101: Fire Combat Personnel Units and Combat Fire: FP strength depends on range: FP at normal range? FP as listed (x 1) FP at normal range? FP as listed (x 1) FP beyond normal range? Halved (x ½) FP beyond normal range? Halved (x ½) How far may a unit fire? (up to twice normal range) How far may a unit fire? (up to twice normal range) FP at adjacent targets? FP doubled (x 2) FP at adjacent targets? FP doubled (x 2) FP at in-hex targets (rare occurrence)? (FP x 3) FP at in-hex targets (rare occurrence)? (FP x 3) Fire Combat Rules Quiz

ASL 101: Fire Combat Prep Fire - German If both German 447 fire at the 747, what is the FP? The TEM? What would the German player have to roll to get a result? If the German player rolled a 5, what happens if the American rolls 6?

ASL 101: Fire Combat Movement Phase 467 moves from U1 to U2 – 1. 5 MF (grain)

ASL 101: Fire Combat Movement Phase – Def. First Fire 467 moves from U1 to U2 – 1. 5 MF (grain) 747 – First Fires 7 FP +1 TEM –1 NAM DR = 8 = PTC PTC DR =6 No Effect 6 FP

ASL 101: Fire Combat Movement Phase – Def. First Fire 467 moves from U2 to U3 – 1 MF + 1 MF 747 – Sub First Fire! 3.5 FP +2 wall –1NAM = 2FP +1 DR = 4 +1 = 5 = NMC 2 FP + 1

ASL 101: Fire Combat Movement Phase – Def. First Fire 467 takes NMC DR = 5 = No Effect NMC

ASL 101: Fire Combat Defensive Final Fire Phase No Final Fire - Remove FF markers

ASL 101: Fire Combat Advancing Fire Phase 467 fires at hex T3 FP is doubled for adj, halved for advancing, halved for area = 2 FP DR = Tem = 6 If an HIP unit is in T3, it would have to be revealed since we got a result. (PTC) No unit in T3. Remove Prep Fire chits 2 FP +2

ASL 101: Fire Combat Advance Phase 467 advances to T3

ASL 101: Fire Combat CC Phase No Close Combat No Concealment No PIN markers to remove End of German Player Turn
