Digital Litera cy And Me By Jamie Everett For Mr. Everett – Calgary Schools/Galileo Educational Network Note: you can listen to this song as long as you want, but if you change pages, it will stop.

What is Digital Literacy? This is a picture of Socrates. He is an old philosopher. You will notice he is reading from a scroll. This is one of the first examples of digital literacy.

What is Digital Literacy? Digital literacy is about how we see things, and in today's world it has a lot to do with how technology has affected how we see things.

What is Digital Literacy? My dad says there are a lot of things on screens, like computers and TVs that we don’t actually see. They are there to make out brains see them, but not our minds.

What is Digital Literacy? We all need to learn to see what our brains see!

d-literacy: Is a process of interpretation. It is the ability to empower a person to see beyond the surface, to learn to enrich through visualization, metaphors, colour, sound, motion and emotion. d-literacy is the essence of comprehension and wisdom. Everett Nancy Kaplan Fabre Burren Desmond Morris Betty Edwards This is what my Dad says...

d-literacy: This probably does not mean much to most of us. You know how dads are! I am going to give you the real goods. Nancy Kaplan Fabre Burren Desmond Morris Betty Edwards This is what my Dad says...

What we Don’t See If you look at this page you will see a background of circles. My dad says this is a metaphor. That means it means something else. He says the circles are a hidden message to let us know that there are lots of ideas which are connected in this electronic story. Our brains see this, but our minds see the story you are reading.

What we Don’t See He also says the background colour is important. Did you know that blue colours make us be quiet and that red colours make us excited. I guess he does not want us to jump out of our seats. He says that it affects how fast our hearts beat! Boy is learning complicated!

What we Don’t See He also says that different colours affect how well we see. Did you know that yellow type on a blue background makes us see better? My dad says so and so does a guy named Fabre Burren. He says that Mr. Burren knows everything about colour. He is a researcher.

This is one of may dads pictures. He says every picture tells a story. He says that how we see the picture changes the story. What kind of stories could you write about this picture?

He says the story can be different, if we take the same picture and change how we see it. Could you write a different story about this one.

What about this one? Do you see any difference in the pictures. My dad says black and white pictures make us sad, afraid or serious. He says that is why horror movies are usually dark.

My Dad’s Example On the next page, my dad did an example of digital literacy with four other pictures. Look at each of the different pictures and see how the same picture shown in four different ways can tell four different stories. Look at each one and think of a story before you go to the next.

D-Literacy

What else matters My Dad says that stories in digital literacy are done in the same way we write stories. He says we start a story with an ourtline or shape of the story, with a beginning, a body and an end. He says we then develop a plot which moves us through the story. If we use great words, he says we create a mood.

My Dad says that every story, picture, movie or TV programs has: Shape Movement and Mood Mood Mood

There is lots more to learn My dad says that what I just told you is the “tip of the iceberg” – that means there is lots more and we don’t know much. He has a full presentation on this at this web site. You have to search for digital literacy.

Here are some other good web sites to learn more about Digital literacy This is a site by Kodak and shows you how to take good pictures. This is a site from Microsoft and shows you how to make good presentations like this one.

Credits: Thanks to my dad for all of his work on Digital Literacy and for his pictures Microsoft for their tutorial on PowerPoint Kodak for their tutorial on Pictures Pink Floyd – The Wall CD This Picture is here to brighten your day.
