BA (Hons) Music & Creative Music Technology Study Skills 2 Communication The right words in the right place in the right order

What we will be covering in this session Woody & tinny words Choosing the right words Choosing the right place Choosing the right order Task

Monty Python’s Flying Circus Woody & tinny words

Using the correct terms Rewrite the following omitting all irrelevant words and making the language and grammar more appropriate

Text Write a brief appraisal of Allie Moss Late Bloomer 1)I really like this music. The track begins with some random rattling sounds but soon the rhythm settle down and you feel the beat in the drum and guitar. 2)There isn’t really a chorus but a hook line does appear after the verse. 3)The backing vocals are very quiet and back in the mix. 4)Her voice is nice and lets you feel the meaning of the song. 5)She doesn’t let the full band sound until towards the end of the track where she goes into a high part of her voice and the music becomes more dramatic. 6)The structure of the song is good and simple although it does not always go where you expect it to go. 7)I would give this song 8 out of 10.

Choosing the right word The thesaurus trail Ella Fitzgerald Begin the Beguine

SplendourSqualor EndeavourIdleness Terms from Begin the Beguine Now take one term and create a list of alternative terms which have the same meaning Open original Begin the Beguine list here Open last year’s results here

Begin the Beguine When they begin the beguine It brings back the sound of music so tender It brings back a night of tropical splendour It brings back a memory evergreen I'm with you once more under the stars And down by the shore an orchestras playing And even the palms seem to be swaying When they begin the beguine To live it again is past all endeavour Except when that tune clutches my heart And there we are swearing to love forever And promising never, never to part Cole Porter Ella Fitzgerald

What moments divine, what rapture serene ‘Till clouds came along to disperse the joys we had tasted And now when I hear people curse the chance that was wasted I know but too well what they mean So don’t let them begin the beguine Let the love that was once a fire remain an ember Let it sleep like the dead desire I only remember When they begin the beguine Oh, yes let them begin the beguine make them play ‘Till the stars that were there before return above you ‘Till you whisper to me once more darling I love you And we suddenly know what heaven we're in When they begin the beguine When they begin the beguine
