 Arctic Tundra By: Ali Megahed 6B gallery.maiman.net

What is an Arctic Tundra?  An Arctic tundra is basically a cold desert which has snow (or ice) instead of sand in a hot desert.  The word Tundra comes from the Finnish word Tuntaria and its definition means “Treeless plains” and that is a good definition to what a tundra is because it has no plants and it’s also mostly ice. iceparkcampground.com

Tundra climate and location  A Tundra is mostly found in the northern hemisphere at the top borders of north America, Russia and Greenland and also on the borders of Antarctica.  In the winter, a tundra is extremely cold and dangerous for many animals and plants, the sun sometimes never rises for weeks. But in the summer plants can grow because the ice melts and there is sunshine. blueplanetbiomes.org

The Tundra’s Organisms  The Arctic Tundra includes 1700 species of plants like Arctic Moss, Bearberry, Pasque flower and many more. There is also fungi and Lichen found in the summer Just as I said before they only grow in the summer when there is not too much ice.  There isn’t that much animals in the Arctic Tundra there are some mammals like Arctic Foxes, Grizzly bears and Caribou. There are birds like Snowy Owls, Arctic terns and Tundra Swans bcsengage.wikispaces.com

Problems in the Tundra  Pollution is making Global warming. Global warming is making a major effect on the Arctic Tundra because more heat would come on the ice which might destroy the tundra biome and some snow mammals like won’t find a place cold enough to live in. polarbearsinternational.org

Other Information  Most of the Perception in the Tundra is snow and hail because it is very cold there.  Some birds like the tern stay in the tundra for summer and fly south for the winter because it is too cold for them.  The Tundra is one of the newest of the Biomes in the world, It is just 10,000 years old.  An arctic Tundra is a Barren land in the winter but it is not exactly like Ice caps because the ground isn’t made out of ice.
