Data processing group

General study of data processing architecture: - overall definition of the data processing functions - share of tasks between on-board and on-ground data processing - global dimensioning of the various elements of the data processing - definition of data interface between ground and board WPs related to data processing (LoI level) On-board data processing architecture - definition at system level of all on-board data processing - share of tasks between individual DPUs at telescope level and central ICU data processing - definition of interfaces between the DPUs and the ICU "normal" DPU data processing - study of both hardware and software for the "normal" DPUs - study of on-board data processing architecture - hardware and software interfaces with the front-end electronics elements - interfaces with the ICU

WPs related to data processing (cont.) "fast" DPU data processing - study of both hardware and software for the „fast" DPUs - detailed hardware and software interfaces with the AOCS ICU data processing - study of the various data processing functions (global instrument control, data processing before downlink, management of pointing and repointing,..) - dimensioning of ICU hardware and software Scientic specifications for fast telescope data processing - definition of the work share between DPU and ICU - input to study of the algorithms, software and hardware design of the DPU

on-ground data centre - final steps of data processing - on-ground processing of imagettes, individual light curves and centroid curves - archiving of the data (mid- and long-term maintenance of the archive) - data distribution to the mission Co-Is as well as to the rest of the community - construction and maintenance of ancillary databases (information on astronomical sources of the input catalogues) - management of a set of high level scientic tools (e.g. light curve analysis tools, calculation of power spectra, etc., developed by Science Consortium) WPs related to data processing (cont.)

Selection of ongoing activities…

- Specifications of the main requirements and constraints in term of functionalities and performance based on science requirements (target definition, science products,...), the instrument design concept, the system and operational aspects (operability constraints, duty cycle,...) - dimensioning and pre-design of the on-board data processing (and the on- board segment / ground segment sharing). - Study data flow rates and first assessment of the CPU budget Normal DPU processing (LESIA (Ph. Plasson))

Fast telescope requirements (KU Leuven (C. Aerts)) 1.Fast telescope filter design and data processing - design the data processing of these two fast telescopes. -propose the set of filters -study requires the definition and implementation of an end-to-end data simulator for PLATO 2. Fast telescope focal plane performance for satellite pointing stability - design of the AOCS performance - study of the hardware and software interfaces with the AOCS Funded and hired personnel: (2 FTE, 140 kEuro)

- Analysis of Payload Definition and Science Requirements - Preliminary evaluation of algorithms started - Organization of work share, interfaces Further activities: - Discussion and analysis of trade-offs/requirements defined by the system and data processing group - To contribute to the definition of fast DPU data processing requirement and fast DPU interface definition to telescope and ICU - Definition of fast data processing concept and algorithms in close cooperation with the system, normal DPU and DPU hardware team - Prototyping of algorithms to assess the performance (e.g. accuracy, duty cycle, memory) - Requirements definition for fast DPU design Fast DPU processing (DLR, G. Peter)

- estimate dimensioning (memory resources, power of processor,...) of the CPU required for the onboard data processing both at individual telescope level and global payload DPU hardware (CAB (M. Mas-Hesse)) - estimate of the corresponding physical size, weight and power consumption to be performed at the last part of the study  needs input on: the observing and processing strategy to be followed: number of pixels, sampling time, number of objects, which algorithms will be executed onboard,...

ICU Processing (OAPD (A. Baruffolo)) - organization of the work - successful application for funding to the Italian Space Agency (ASI) - discussion with Austrian collegues (W.Weiss) on their contrubution to study the combination and compression of photometric data before downlink - initial contacts with a company (Aurelia Microelectronics) to gather some technical information on the Integrated Payload Processing Module (IPPM) for implementing the ICU,.

Ground data center IAS (Baudin/Appourchaux), MPS (Gizon) WP1) Stellar catalog definition and production (LAM, IoA, MPIA, TLS, AIP) Requires input from Science Consortium WP2) ESA: data capture + level 0 archive WP3) IAS: Production of level 1 and 2 data  level 1 : calibrated data  level 2 : corrected light curves (+Leuven for fast telesc.) WP4) MPS: Archive and distribution - level 1 and 2 archive - distribution of level 2 - distribution of stellar catalog  IAS mirror

WP5) MPS: Processing infrastructure -workflow and job management systems -processing pipelines -compute cluster WP6) Pipeline data analysis software Requires input from Science Consortium  DLR-Berlin+LAM: exoplanets  MPS+IAS: extraction asteroseismic frequencies (solar-like osc)  Aarhus + Meudon: stellar models (definition of required hardware)  etc, etc... Other pipeline software Ground data center (cont.) Question: Should the ground data center reflect the need for follow-up and parallel ground-based observations? Meeting: October 2008 at MPS

Ongoing activities  refine definition of workpackes  organise workshare  discussion of interfaces between workpackages  requirement definition for data processing  discussion of interfaces to PST  Meeting to be organized for November.
