New Teacher Orientation Wall Township Public Schools August 2013

I. Elements of Effective Planning II. Language Arts Portfolio III. Language Arts mandates IV. Mathematics mandates V. Planning for Special Education Students VI. Planning Models At the bottom of each slide are the corresponding Framework for Teaching elements.

 Ensures that Common Core Standards are being addressed throughout the scope of the year.  Gives direction and purpose to your daily instruction through your understanding of expected learning outcomes.

 Activities directly correlate to the Common Core Standards  NJASK 3,4 and 5 measures the standards  Objectives are to be stated in terms of anticipated student outcomes  Objectives are to be measurable  Differentiated instruction  Emphasis on small group instruction versus whole group instruction  Should indicate that grade levels are communicating.

 Required tests and work samples that are to be administered, scored and collected throughout the year.  Timelines…What do you notice?  Rubrics/Benchmarks/DRAs/MAPs Domain 1f

 Word Walls starting at the beginning of the year  Writer’s Notebook beginning in September/October  Guided Reading Groups by the end of September (low groups seen daily)  Centers 4-5 times/week (min. 3 centers) Domain 1a,1e, 1f

 Utilize the regular education curriculum and respective guidelines while making the necessary modifications for the student  Leveled readers are to be used during guided reading  Using Writer’s Workshop provides the opportunity to reach the needs of your students (conferencing, mini-lessons etc.) Domain 1a,1b
