Learner Voice at The Causeway School

How it was before! Each Tutor group voted two students onto the Year Council Heads of Year met and chaired their Year Council Meeting. Two students from each year attended School Council chaired by the Deputy Head and attended by the Chair of Governors.

Topics discussed Toilets Canteen and food School clubs Uniform Buddy system All very admirable but few changes made and students felt little empowerment.

How to improve 4 students attended a Student Council Conference in London.

Behaviour Panel This was the idea we were going to start with and develop.

Learner Voice Conference 17 th July 2008 Sally-Ann came to school and led 20 students through a day of training. We have brought some of our thoughts to show you. We used the “wheel” to help us decide where we are and where we want to go.

Support The Chair of Governors came to see how we were doing and joined in with our discussions We had biscuits, sweets and lunch provided out of the £1000 budget that has been given to us.

The New Structure A small group of students met to put the final touches to the structure and to decide how to manage and lead the new groups.

Community Groups These are the groups that will set about planning for change. These are the groups who will monitor what is happening in school. These are the groups to speak out on behalf of the students. These are the groups who will make things happen.

Youth Forum Three year 11 students have become involved locally. They aim to find out what local youngsters want and work with Eastbourne Borough Council to try and provide out of school activities.

Young Pioneers 10 students from all years have put themselves forward to work as Young Pioneers. This involves having a say in what services are available to children in East Sussex.

Rotary Leadership Two students went for a weekend sponsored by The Rotary to develop their leadership skills. These are all examples of the snowball effect following on from the Learner Voice training.

Where are we now? Lots of students involved in leadership, training and having a say in what goes on for young people. Notice boards to communicate and lots of plans to improve communication for young people. Restructured system. Less reliance on teachers.

Loads still to do! We have started the process….
