Why Waste Reduction? l Reduce damage to environment l Reduce operating costs l Avoid waste transportation and disposal costs l Reduce regulatory requirements l Improve safety and health l Reduce liabilities

Common Hazardous Wastes l Waste oil if contaminated l Spent solvents l Spent caustic parts washing solution l Cleaning tank sludge l used antifreeze l used lead acid batteries l contaminated rags l Floor drain sludges l Freon l Oil filters (punctured and drained) l brake fluids l hydraulic fluids l Transmission Fluids l Transmission filters

Container Selection Compatibility l Don’t use metal containers for corrosive solutions. l Don’t use plastic containers for solvents. l Don’t use unlined fiberboard drums for liquids

Integrity l Don’t use containers with holes or split seams. l Don’t use containers with dents l Don’t use containers that have severe rust l Don’t use containers that have bulges

Container Accumulation l Store waste in appropriate containers –Don’t cross contaminate! l Label containers as “Hazardous Waste” or “Dangerous Waste” l Label containers with appropriate warning labels l Close containers and seal between uses l Maintain a 30 inch separation between containers

l Inspect containers and storage weekly l Store flammable waste in accordance with local fire department l Do not store incompatible waste in the same container. KEEP WASTES SEPERATE l Prepare spill response plan l Keep disposal records five years
