Demystifying UC Articulation Aurelia Long Articulation Office r

Today We Will Discuss Overview of articulation process Articulation roles & responsibilities Types of agreements Unique practices for processing articulation Best practices for submitting artic requests UC Berkeley Admissions

Four Postsecondary Educational Segments

Multiple Hats Like you, UC A.O.s have varied responsibilities: –Exploring Majors (ASSIST) –UC Transfer Preparation Paths –Responsibilities vary, may include: »Transfer programs, TAG, outreach »Honors program coordination »Campus, UCOP & CIAC committees »Develop and provide training »Catalog, web & publication updates »Evaluation, Application Review: FR & TR

Role of University A.O. in the Articulation Process Gatekeeper of proposals and CORs sent by CCC Primary point of contact for our campus Liaison with the CCC articulation officers, counselors, system offices, ACS, and UC faculty Facilitate all aspects of the articulation process Update & publish articulation agreements on ASSIST Add articulation throughout the year on ASSIST

Role of University Faculty in the Articulation Process Faculty establish requirements and standards for articulated courses Discipline faculty are responsible for the evaluation of CCC course content Identification of comparable courses Authorization of acceptance

UC TCA Courses are submitted annually to University of California Office of the President (UCOP) for review/approval A course must meet transfer credit criteria per BOARS policy Approved CCC courses are listed on the UC TCA BOARS policy & basic principles for transfer credit criteria: The course should be comparable to one offered at the lower division level at any of the UC campuses in scope, level, and prerequisite Or, if a course is not comparable to any offered at UC, it must be appropriate for a university degree in terms of its purpose, scope, and depth

UC Transferable vs. Articulated 1. A Transferable Course (System-wide) ‾ UCOP decides if a course is UC transferable ‾ Accepted at the point of admissions for unit credit at any UC campus ‾ Approved course is listed on UC TCA 2. An Articulated Course (Campus-specific) ‾ Discipline faculty authorize a course for articulation ‾ Accepted in lieu of a university course/requirement ‾ Listed in the UC campus agreement with the CCC All Articulated Courses Must First Be Transferable. But, Not All Transferable Courses Are Articulated

IGETC vs. UC Campus-Specific GE/Breadth IGETC and UC campus GE are distinct and separate patterns Some IGETC-certified courses may also satisfy UC GE patterns –UC campus GE patterns are unique –UC campus practices for seeking campus GE articulation vary Courses must be UC Transferable to be considered for IGETC or GE evaluation

UC Articulations on ASSIST: Tips, Similarities & Differences Among UCs Articulation by Major: All UCs Articulation by Department: 7 UCs –Excluding UCI, UCLA Articulation for GE: 7 UCs –Excluding UCLA, UCSD, UCI (selected CCCs) At UCB, and other campuses: course-to-course artic is our basis With few exceptions, course-to-course articulation is valid wherever the course is used

Course to Course Articulation 11

CCC to UC Major Articulation Second level of articulation between UC and CCC. The major articulation agreements offer students guidance in preparing for specific majors at each UC campus. Indicates courses that fulfill major prep; alerts if IGETC is acceptable; explains use of AP/IB credit toward subject requirements, etc.

AP / IB Articulation AP/IB score credit is the same across UCs: –UC transferable units, eligibility, IGETC AP/IB course-to-course articulation and satisfaction of requirements vary per UC Finding UC AP/IB information: –UC Campus Comparative Reference handout –UCOP Website

Best Practices for Submitting UC Articulation Proposals ASSIST Next Generation plans a new tracking system For now, the preferred method for all UCs: –Submit proposals via –COR: Web links, word documents, may not be preferred Submit proposals grouped by department/discipline –Some UCs specify a max. per submission, e.g., 4-6 –Include any explanatory information, e.g., replacing existing All UCs, encourage you to check, prior to submission: –Is the course UC transferable? –Has it already been articulated? –Was it previously requested, and when? UC Comparative Reference handout identifies UC preferences

Reasons UC Faculty Request Additional Documentation Details not found in the COR No indication of time spent on specific topics –including lab topics and lab time spent Missing types of assignments for specific topics Criteria for evaluation, especially writing assignments are unspecified Subject-specific information lacking in the course objectives and student learning outcomes

Contacting UC Faculty & Academic Departments Direct all articulation requests & questions through A.O.s Contact the UC A.O. first before making inquires to UC campus faculty/departments UC A.O.s may work with specific department liaisons who work with multiple faculty UC department faculty/staff may not be as familiar with articulation protocol

Annual Publication of UC Agreements UCs... publish July through January update major advisories & prerequisites obtain CCC course additions, deletions and changes from ASSIST program & reports maintain and manipulate CCC course data when establishing agreements on ASSIST do not change their side of the agreement within academic year – with rare exception

UC Annual Update Reports UCs provide an annual summary of updates to majors and curriculum changes through CIAC listserv UCB: typically, provides report in August Other UCs may have different timelines Reports may provide new/changes to curriculum; majors/minors; changes to major prerequisites; and campus updates Information useful to CCC A.O.s & counselors

Timing / Reminders Varied A.O. responsibilities impact processing UC faculty sabbaticals, teaching, research and travel schedules may affect the time needed to process articulation proposals Contact the UC campus A.O. when response time seems unusually extended CCC A.O.s get an from ASSIST when an articulation has been published with the articulation outcome If a course is denied, we encourage you to resubmit, if the course is revised Let us know! – is this new; re-submission; addition?

Rules of Thumb All articulated courses must first be transferable, but not all transferable courses are articulated Each UC campus will have separate articulation with each community college, even when the colleges are in the same school district (exception: San Diego district) You can't assume that a community college course will be accepted the same way at different UC campuses. For example, UCSD may not use a course the same way that UCB does Different majors at the same UC campus may apply community college courses differently, e.g., Required vs Recommended We do not sever articulation within an academic year when students may be disadvantaged by loss of the articulation We honor the articulation in place at the time the student completed a course.

UC BERKELEY Transfer Admission

UCB Transfer Admission Transfer Admission Requirements Completion of: 60 transferable semester units (90 quarter units) Breadth requirements Prerequisite courses for the major MyBA forms

Timeline for Fall 2015 Transfer Admission Application available: Early August Application deadline: November 30 January 1-31 st - Mandatory Transfer Academic Update (TAU) form due for transfer applicants to report final grades and additional course work April 27 th – Transfer decisions released June 1 st - Deadline for transfer applicants to submit Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) July 1 st - Final official transcripts, and other required documents, e.g., IGETC Cert. due at campus admissions office for admitted students.

College of Letters & Science TWO WAYS TO MEET GE ADMISSION REQUIREMENT 1. Community college courses that are applicable to IGETC – see IGETC for UC and CSU in ASSIST IGETC may not be the best choice depending on the major, i.e., engineering 2. Community colleges courses that are articulated to UCB’S campus-specific GE pattern – see For General Education/Breadth in ASSIST Refer to the individual articulation agreements for GE requirements of the other colleges & schools
