My child enjoys school… The school helps my child to have a healthy lifestyleThe school makes sure my child is well prepared for the future The school keeps my child safe Great Ouseburn Primary School – Parents Survey 2011 Summary This document includes the collated results followed by a summary of parents’ comments.

I know what my child needs to learn next in English I know what my child needs to learn next in maths My child is making enough progress at this school My child is making enough progress at the school

The teaching is good at this school Physical education is well provided for The school helps me support my child’s learning I am confident in helping my child learn at home

The school values my child’s achievements and interests The school deals effectively with unacceptable behaviour The school meets my child’s particular needs The school is led and managed effectively

I feel comfortable with approaching the school about a problem The school takes account of my suggestions or concerns Overall I am happy with my child’s experiences at this school I feel comfortable with approaching the school about a complaint

I know what the school is trying to achieve through its motto, ‘We all share this incredible world’.

What helps children to learn Parents reported that the school is a friendly, caring and supportive community: Friendly ‘community feel to the school Children friendly and caring to each other, including across age groups Approachable staff The school promotes positive values Learning passport Parents rate our teaching skills very highly: Excellent teachers/TAs Dedicated, hard working staff Staff give time to the needs of each child, including using ‘learning passports’ where children need extra support. Staff know individual children Kind and helpful teaching/ encouraging atmosphere The school is well managed: Makes best use of resources Enables small classes The range and quality of activities is excellent: The range of activities is engaging Practical learning activities are enjoyed Learning to play a musical instrument is good Residential visits good Languages, including Chinese Drama and role play good Research projects that children also worked on at home were good.

How can we improve further? A number of suggestions were around visits and events. The comments below were from individual parents. Could we include more off site experiences? Can we give more notice of school events so that parents can arrange to attend more easily? Would prefer swimming lessons to continue as before Would prefer residential just for Y5/6 children What we are doing: Continuing to think about where offsite experiences are helpful to learning, although we have to balance the cost of this Giving more dates in advance in the newsletter We will monitor how swimming goes – some parents were very supportive of the change, although we know some were not. Consulting about the residential visit for next year. Some suggestions were around curriculum and homework Kirfs (maths ‘quick recall facts’) could be sent home as a paper copy rather than just on web site More research or paper based homework/ structured maths homework We could increase our languages teaching further. We could work towards sharing more information with parents throughout the year about their child’s learning. What we are doing: We have ed KIRFs and made paper copies available in our learning resource area. We will continue to monitor homework and report back again during the year We are negotiating with our Chinese partners to introduce new ways of language teaching. We are investigating ways of sharing more information during the year, in addition to the newsletter, home learning books, homework etc. We hope to implement firm plans by the new year. Other comments: Is grammar taught in a structured way? It would be good if the school had its own sports facilities Check that children eat their packed lunch What we are doing: We do teach grammar in a structured way alongside the other aspects of writing. We are constantly reviewing and improving our sports facilities and hope to make further improvements this year.
