Shiley Center for Orthopaedic Research and Education “A World of Healing” Vanessa Capetillo and Mario Hernandez Vanessa Capetillo ◊ San Diego State University ◊ Major in Computer Engineering, Minor in Cellular & Molecular Biology ◊ ◊ Mario Hernandez ◊ San Diego State University ◊ Major in Mechanical Engineering, Minor in Cellular & Molecular Biology ◊ ◊ Shiley Center for Orthopaedic Research and Education (S.C.O.R.E) mission is “to improve patient care and quality of life through innovative orthopedic research and education” With the help of other bioengineers and doctors: Vanessa was to create and aid in the design of the shoulder prosthetic device by maximizing range of motion. Mario was to measure and take data from CT scans to plan and eventually find the best location and sizes of each prosthetic device before each surgery. The research of the knee and shoulder prosthetic devices are projects that will continually grow and evolve. Results include helping surgeons discover optimum placement of prosthetics so patients can have full range of motions and live without fear of dislocations. A result of this continuous research is seen in that hip prosthetics dislocations have gone down to less than 4%. Engineers are aiming to reduce the number of dislocations to less than 1%. Friedman vs Hoenecke method Glenoid CT Evaluation Friedman version (traditional) Hoenecke version (new) Subluxation is partial dislocation of a joint. Circle method to measure subluxation in each patient. Bone Method alternative method This internship is a valuable experience that will aid us in determining our future goals and routes after graduating from San Diego State University. With the advancements of computers and the emergence of current computer software it is becoming easier to model situations and theories more precisely. With the help of modeling and optimization, the way engineers and surgeons approach the human body are constantly changing. Further development of these techniques will ensure long, high quality lives. With this we hope to achieve improvements in every aspect of the medical field. The internships at S.C.O.R.E gave us a taste of a professional environment in the research field. The goals of S.C.O.R.E projects are: To develop new knee, hip, and shoulder prosthetic devices that will allow people to return to their daily routines without pain To develop prosthetics that will last a life time. Our assigned project is to model, measure, and take data from CT scans, to plan and eventually find the best location and sizes of the prosthetic devices before a surgery. Another aim of our project is to improve the prosthetic devices by maximizing the range of motion of the hip, knee, and shoulder. INTRODUCTION PURPOSE METHODSRESULTS CONCLUSION Knee Models The procedure required digitizing of the bones. All components needed to be in the same coordinate system. Alignment and orientation of all bone structures for more precise testing. CAD drawing of knee Prosthetic Load testing on a cadaver Knee CT of Shoulder with labeled axis Leg CAD using Rhino NSF Grant #: CHART or PICTURE CAD of Hip Prosthetic Utilized software including: Rhinoceros Matlab Microsoft Visual Studio BodySim Using Computer Aided Designs (CAD), to perform virtual surgeries Conducted test with cadaver body parts CT scans and X-Rays to use real body dimensions and measurements CAD of the Shoulder Preparation of a knee for testing Knee: Femur touching Patella ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS  We want to thank S.C.O.R.E. at Scripps Clinic, La Jolla for giving us the opportunity to explore and learn in a professional environment.  A special Thanks to Darryl D’Lima, MD, PhD, Peter Chen, PhD, and all other bioengineers and doctors that made our internship experience invaluable.
