STAT!Ref® is an electronic medical library that enables users to cross-search more than 60 core medical references such as Harrison’s, Williams Obstetrics and ACP’s evidence-based PIER It includes over 35 titles found on the Brandon-Hill list, the selection guide for health libraries/institutions

Demo of a Search Scenario 1: A doctor finds out her patient is pregnant and asthmatic. She needs treatment advice.

Select Titles Choose “select all” for a comprehensive search (default) Or choose “select none” and hold the control key down and click on specific titles.

Enter search statement Type in a search statement like, “asthma pregnancy”

Set precision Choose a precision: AUTO OADJ ADJ NEAR/X AND OR

Set precision The default automatically selects the best search precision, or choose from these: Pregnancy OADJ asthma | Ordered adjacency or “exact phrase” search Pregnancy ADJ asthma | Order adjacency search Pregnancy NEAR/5 asthma | Find pregnancy within 5 words of asthma Pregnancy AND asthma | Find pregnancy and asthma in the same document Pregnancy OR asthma | Find any document with pregnancy or asthma

Execute search Click the search button OR press Enter/Return on the keyboard

Demo of a Search Scenario 2: An older man comes into the pharmacy with a pill he has been taking all week. After looking closely at the pill he sees a monograph on the pill and is concerned because he thought he was taking aspirin. You need to identify the pill and you want to look up the “monograph,” or the lettering on the pill itself.

Identify drugs quickly Choose “select none” and hold the control key down and click on specific drug titles. Type in the monograph, “BL V2” Use ADJ precision

Demo of a Search Scenario 3: A first-year medical student is looking to expand his research on “heart attack” but does not remember the specific clinical term(s).

Synonym & Suffix Search Type “heart attack” Hit “Include Synonyms”

Demo of a Search Scenario 4: An insurance claims manager wants to verify an ICD-9 code entered by a nurse. The code is 241 and she has no idea what this code refers to.

Identify ICD-9 Codes Choose “select none” and hold the control key down and click on the Ingenix ICD-9-CM title Type in “241” Press “Search”

Identify ICD-9 Codes Ingenix tells us that 241 is a code for a “nontoxic uninodular goiter”

Demo of a Search Scenario 5: A physician wants to look up the most current Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) information for diabetes to stay up to date on the disease findings

PIER: Consult the Experts Physicians' Information and Education Resource (PIER) is a Web-based decision-support tool designed for rapid point-of- care delivery of current, evidence-based guidance for clinicians. Developed by the American College of Physicians (ACP), PIER consists of modules focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of hundreds of the most common diseases, with additional disease topics added monthly.

Search PIER Choose “select none” and hold the control key down and click on “ACP’s PIER” Type in “diabetes” Hit “search”
