9-8 6th grade math Finding the Sales Tax

Objective To find sales tax and total cost Why? To know how much sales tax will be or should be added to your purchases. Remember sales tax prices are rounded to the nearest cent (round up to the nearest cent). “Uncle Sam wants all of his money!” 

California State Standards NS 1.4 : Calculate given percentages of quantities. AF 1.1 : Write and solve one-step linear equations in one variable.

Vocabulary Sales tax Sales tax rate An amount added to a subtotal of money spent Sales tax rate A rate percent multiplied to a subtotal

How to Find the Sales Tax and the Total Cost 1) Multiply the % to the subtotal. This is the sales tax. 2) Add the tax to the subtotal. This is the grand total. 3) Check your work Subtotal = $14.69. Tax % = 6.5% T = 6.5% x 14.69 T = 0.065 x 14.69 T = 0.95485 T = 0.96 Grand total = 14.69 + 0.96 = $15.65

Try It! 4) Cost: $30; rate sales tax: 5% 30 x 0.05 = 1.50 = 30 + 1.50 = 1.52 = 19 + 1.52 = $20.52 2) Cost: $412; rate sales tax: 6% 412 x 0.06 = 24.72 = 412 + 24.72 = $436.72 3) Cost: $62.50; rate sales tax: 5.5% 62.50 x 0.055 = 3.44 = 62.50 + 3.44 = $65.94 Find the sales tax and total cost. cost:$19; rate of sales tax: 8% Cost: $412; rate of sales tax: 6% Cost: $62.50; rate of sales tax: 5.5% Cost: $30; rate of sales tax: 5% 4) Cost: $30; rate sales tax: 5% 30 x 0.05 = 1.50 = 30 + 1.50 = $31.50

Objective Review To find sales tax and total cost Why? You now know how much sales tax will be or should be added to your purchases. Remember sales tax prices are rounded to the nearest cent (round up to the nearest cent). “Uncle Sam wants all of his money!”  You multiply a price by the sales tax rate to find the tax, then you add the tax to the price to find the total cost of the item.
