1) Select Topic Two topics must be submitted for Friday Acceptable topics are issues with two sides –You must choose to be for or against the issue Preliminary research is necessary on your part to determine if your topic is doable

2) Research Questions Develop questions to pursue in your research –Deepen your background knowledge –Investigate key issues and debates –Establish support for your viewpoint

Central Research Question Too broad? Too narrow? Just right? Example Issue: Juvenile delinquency –What is the 1994 rate of juvenile delinquency in the U.S.? –What can we do to reduce juvenile delinquency in the U.S.? –Does education play a role in reducing juvenile delinquents' return to crime?

Central Research Question Just right: –Does education play a role in reducing juvenile delinquents' return to crime? You will later turn your central research question into you thesis statement by providing an answer: –Education plays a role in reducing juvenile delinquents’ return to crime because it gives them the resources necessary for making better decisions.
