Galatians 3: the big picture Last Sunday, in our study of Galatians 3:6-9, Paul used the record of God’s dealings with Abram (Abraham), from the book of Genesis, to prove that all are justified by faith, & only by faith. Today, in Galatians 3:10-14, Paul turns the tables & proves the impossibility of being justified by works of the Law. The Law can only curse, because nobody can keep the Law perfectly!

One way to look at Galatians 3:10-14 The bad news is that because of the human inability to keep the Law of Moses or any system under a Principle of Law perfectly, the Law can only curse us! (verses 10-11a; 12) The good news is that God, at Christ’s expense & by His works, justifies (He declares righteous) every person who believes, so that we who believe are blessed! (verses 11b; 13-14)

Curse & blessing in Galatians 3:10-14 For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the Law, to perform them." 11 Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, "The righteous man shall live by faith." 12 However, the Law is not of faith; on the contrary, "He who practices them shall live by them." 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us -- for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree" in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

What kind of curse is this? Paul did not write, of course, about a curse or evil spell that is invoked from “magic”. Acts 8:9-24 & 19:19 both address that kind of magic & its supposed curses (& Ephesians 1:21). What Paul wrote about was a curse from God based on His rejection of sin & His judgment. God’s curse is just the opposite of His blessing of believers (as Paul contrasted in Galatians 3:14).

We won’t understand how good the good news is, until we understand how bad the bad news is! In the presentation of the gospel to those who don’t believe, the really bad news has to be given 1 st, in order to understand the great need for the really good news! In the presentation of God’s blessing for those of us who believe, Paul must 1 st get each one of us to understand that trying to live under the Law is really bad news! Only then are we ready to hear the good news!

Paul started with superlatives: Galatians 3:10-14 For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the Law, to perform them." 11 Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, "The righteous man shall live by faith." 12 However, the Law is not of faith; on the contrary, "He who practices them shall live by them." 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us -- for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree" in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Galatians 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the Law, to perform them." Paul is asking the believers in Galatia, “What are you doing under there (under a curse)?”

Galatians 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the Law, to perform them." That is why Paul can say categorically, “For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse”. Those who are placed under, or place themselves under the Law of Moses, or a Principle of Law, are subject to God’s total rejection of & judgment against both thoughts & acts of sin. Any shortfall at all (even one!) is a lack of total perfection.

Galatians 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the Law, to perform them." How many human beings can abide by all the things written in the Law of Moses to perform each & every one of them all the time? None. That is why Paul wrote & quoted “Cursed is everyone…”. If the Law of Moses or any law system sets the standard, then “Cursed is everyone…” – none of us humans ‘pulls it off’.

Galatians 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the Law, to perform them." There is a basic assumption to Paul’s writing about the Law of Moses or any Principle of Law: human beings cannot conform perfectly to a law system. The failure rate is 100%! Isaiah 53:6 & Romans 3:23 both get that one critical point across perfectly: “all”.

Galatians 3:11 Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, "The righteous man shall live by faith." This states the assumption beneath what Paul said in verse 10: absolutely nobody can fulfill or live out the Law in every detail all the time - none. Therefore nobody will ever be justified (declared righteous by God) by trying to live out the Law of Moses - nobody.

Galatians 3:11 Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, "The righteous man shall live by faith." “The righteous man shall live by faith”, is from Habakkuk 2:4c, which Paul also quotes in Romans 1:17c.

Galatians 3:11 Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, "The righteous man shall live by faith." Paul answered the question of whether we live by the Law or live by faith. His answer, from the Old Testament, is clear & singular: We live by faith! We are declared righteous by God & are spiritually alive, & live out that spiritual life (walk) only by faith in what God has said & in what He has done in Christ!

Galatians 3:12 However, the Law is not of faith; on the contrary, "He who practices them shall live by them." OK, so why is the Law not of faith? Faith is dependence upon what God has done & is doing & will do – & it is not dependence upon what I have done, am doing & will do (that’s the definition of the Principle of Law).

Leviticus 18:1-5 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 "Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, 'I am the Lord your God. 3 You shall not do what is done in the land of Egypt where you lived, nor are you to do what is done in the land of Canaan where I am bringing you; you shall not walk in their statutes. 4 You are to perform My judgments and keep My statutes, to live in accord with them; I am the Lord your God. 5 So you shall keep My statutes and My judgments, by which a man may live if he does them; I am the Lord.'"

Galatians 3:12 However, the Law is not of faith; on the contrary, "He who practices them shall live by them." The words “on the contrary” are translated from alla = sharp contrast. What Paul is getting across in Galatians is that the Law of Moses, or any Principle of Law, as the basis of salvation or as the basis of our seeking to live daily in righteousness, is totally contrary to the Principle of Grace & contrary to faith.

Galatians 3:13-14 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us -- for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree" in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. These words are a summary of Deuteronomy 21: Hanging a criminal on a tree was not common among the Jews (rare exception: Joshua 8:29), but it was done by other nearby nations, such as Egypt (Genesis 40:16-19).

Deuteronomy 21:22-23 If a man has committed a sin worthy of death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, 23 his corpse shall not hang all night on the tree, but you shall surely bury him on the same day (for he who is hanged is accursed of God), so that you do not defile your land which the Lord your God gives you as an inheritance.

Redeemed (exagorazō = ek + agorazō) This word was used for buying a slave or a captive (military or pirated captive) out of the marketplace by paying the full ransom price. This word tells us that Christ paid the price to redeem every person ever to be born on the planet (1 John 2:2), so that every person who believes enjoys the benefits (blessings), having been bought out of the slave market of sin, never to be offered for sale again. A key word in Galatians 3:13

What Paul is getting across in Galatians is that the Law of Moses, or any Principle of Law, as the basis of salvation or as the basis of righteousness, is totally contrary to the Principle of Grace & to living by faith. Totally.

Christ redeemed us, having bought us for full price from the slave market of sin. But His intent was not to ‘drain us dry’, but to bless us!

And Christ’s intent was never again to place us on the auction block for sale again. He bought us out from the slave market of sin - forever!

Christ took fully upon Himself the full penalty for sins. He became cursed of God for each of us who deserved the full curse & full penalty.

All on earth blessed in Genesis 18:18 "…Abraham will surely become a great and mighty nation, and in him all the nations (Greek Old Testament: ethnos) of the earth will be blessed…“ (see also Genesis 22:18)

In Genesis 22:18 God said to Abraham, “In your seed [Christ] all the nations of the earth shall be blessed”

Galatians 3:13-14 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us -- for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree" in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles (Greek: ethnos), so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. God is the Promise Keeper. God made several promises to Abraham about 4000 years ago, which He fulfilled in part through Christ, about 2000 years ago. We can count on those promises today, tomorrow & forever!

In Galatians 3:2 Paul had written, “This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?” Here he gives a very clear answer! We receive the Spirit by faith!

Galatians 3:10-12 Expanded & Explained It follows logically that as many people as pursue righteousness from human accomplishments from the Law or Moses or any Law principle are under a negative judgment from God; and this fact is based upon what Moses himself wrote, "Cursed by God is every single one who does not conform to every single detail to the things that are in the book of the Law" 11 So then, that absolutely no one is declared righteous by the Law before God is abundantly clear; since the Law itself says this, "The man who is declared righteous shall live - and not die - by faith in what God says." 12 However, the Law is not out of faith; but in sharp contrast, "He who does all that the Law requires shall live by his own self effort."

Galatians 3:13-14 Expanded & Explained Christ has paid the full ransom price to buy each one of us out from the slave market of sin, never to return us to there again, away from the curse from God which comes from the Law. Christ has become cursed by God in our place (we were the ones who deserved to be there!) -- for it is written in the very Law of Moses, "Cursed is every single one who hangs on a tree" in order that by what Christ Jesus has done – His work on our behalf -- the blessing God promised to Abraham would come to all the non-Jews, so that we, whether Jews or Gentiles, would receive the long-promised blessing of the Spirit by means of faith, which is utter dependence upon what God has done through Christ!
