“The Way of Escape” Part 2 2/28/2010 am “The Way of Escape” Part 2 1 Corinthians 10:13

“Way of escape” # 1 Follow the example of Jesus! 1 Peter 2:21-24; 4:1-4 Don’t be brought down to the tempter’s level! – Mt. 27:11-44 (Smote, Mocked, Spat) Did no sin! Did not use guile! Did not revile back! Went as a lamb to the slaughter! Isa. 53:7 “the Lamb of God” – John 1:29, 36 Matthew 5:39 but I say unto you, resist not him that is evil: but whosoever smiteth thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

“Way of escape” # 2 Don’t violate your conscience! Romans 14:23 Jews on Pentecost: Acts 2:37 “pricked in their heart” – “to pierce thoroughly, i.e. (figuratively) to agitate violently ("sting to the quick"):--prick.” Jews in Steven’s address: Acts 7:51-60 Railed on & stoned the messenger! 1 Timothy 4:2 – “seared” = “to brand ("cauterize"), i.e. (by implication) to render unsensitive (figuratively):--sear with a hot iron.” – Strong 2 Timothy 4:3-4; Ephesians 4:17-20

Matthew 4:1-11 Devil used the 3 points of temptation verses 1-4 – “lust of the flesh” verses 5-7 – “pride of life” verses 8-10 – “lust of the eyes” Answered the Devil with Scripture! “it is written” – Matthew 4:1-11 verse 4 – Deuteronomy 8:3 verse 7 – Deuteronomy 6:16 (cf. 1 Corinthians 10:9) verse 10 – Deuteronomy 6:13

“Way of escape” # 3 CAN YOU DO THAT? Use Scripture as did Jesus! “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” Ephesians 6:17 Hebrews 4:12 Must Study – 2 Timothy 2:15-18; Hebrews 5:12-14; Ephesians 4:11-14 Necessary to properly use the Sword!

“Way of escape” # 4 Walk the strait & narrow way! Matthew 7:13-14 This is the unpopular way! cf. Galatians 1:10 God’s people always in the minority! Don’t follow a multitude to do evil! Exodus 23:2 “Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to turn aside after a multitude to wrest (justice)”

“Way of escape” # 4 Walk the strait & narrow way! Matthew 7:13-14 This is the unpopular way! cf. Galatians 1:10 God’s people always in the minority! Don’t follow a multitude to do evil! “Way of escape” # 5 Choose Godly Companions! 1 Corinthians 15:33-34 To be Godly, surround yourself with Godly people! Remember the power of leaven! 1 Corinthians 5:6; Galatians 5:9 Evil influences can rub-off on you! Deuteronomy 7:1-4; 17:17; cf. 2 Corinthians 6:14ff

“Way of escape” # 6 RUN! “Flee fornication!” - 1 Cor. 6:15-18 1 Cor. 10:14; 1 Tim. 6:8-11; 2 Tim 2:22 Joseph Fled! Genesis 39:1-21 He got himself out of the house! Falsely accused! Was treated unkindly! Thrown into prison! But - verse 21 – Lord showed him mercy!

1 Corinthians 10:13 “There hath no temptation taken you but such as man can bear: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation make also the way of escape, that ye may be able to endure it.”

Summary Some ways of escape… Follow the example of Christ! Don’t violate your conscience! Use scripture as Jesus did! Take the straight and narrow route! Seek Godly companions! Run like Joseph did!

Question Will we use the “way of escape” provided to bare up against the temptations of this life? We Must!
