JA BizTown Student Goals Upon completion of the JA BizTown program, students will be able to: Demonstrate a basic understanding of the free enterprise system. Build money management skills through a practical knowledge of economic concepts and banking practices. Develop an understanding of basic business practices and responsibilities. Demonstrate the soft skills necessary for their successful participation in the world of work. Discuss the roles they, as citizens, play in their community as workers and consumers, and relate these personal roles to the free enterprise system. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of nonprofit organizations in our communities. Discuss the importance of citizen rights and responsibilities in a community.

JA BizTown Benefits To Educators The lessons, written by JA Worldwide, are easy to use. Minimal lesson preparation time is needed because of efficient activity organization throughout the Curriculum Guide. The program content has been aligned with national and statewide academic content standards in social studies (economics), mathematics, language arts, and career development. Enhanced Learning Opportunities, that allow teachers to provide optional, complementary activities to the core curriculum, are provided. The curriculum consists of fun, interactive, engaging content that gets students excited about learning.

Explain also that the core curriculum tabs that contain the actual lesson plans are printed in green to make them easier to quickly identify when they are teaching. The remainder of the tabs are printed in black.

Other Curriculum Guide Features Citizen Guide pages included Answer keys Transparencies Resource Sheets Unit Assessments Do not take the time to have teachers flip through their Guides at this point, as this is just a general introduction to what the Guide offers. Briefly present here that everything that they need for planning their lessons is found in the Guide including all student workbook pages, all answer keys, as well as copies of all transparencies, resource sheets and evaluations. Everything is contained in this Guide for quick and easy lesson planning.

Lesson 1: What Is a Community? Pretest Answer Sheet Citizen Guide Curriculum Guide, Unit 1 Lesson1 Actual Pretest Curriculum Guide, Tab 3-Pretest and Posttest. (You will need to make copies of the test. It is not in the Citizen Guide.) Discuss that the Pretest and Posttest (the same test) is located in the Curriculum Guide, Unit 1 Lesson 1, and in the Curriculum Guide, Tab 3-Pretest and Posttest. Teachers will need to make copies of the actual test for their students, although the answer sheets for both tests are found in the Citizen Guide.

Bank account application Open a JA BizTown Bank Account Bank account application Stress that this Application needs to be kept because it will be later returned to the students with their assigned account number written on it.

Check It Out Poster Completing a Deposit Ticket Endorsing a paycheck Entering a transaction in a Checkbook Register

Double-Entry Accounting Resource Sheet 2-3 Enter transactions on white lines. Payments & deposits Transaction column and balance column Show math work in balance column. Use + or - sign in balance column. Only new balance is written on the grey line. Math work is not done in head, but show all work, Teachers must understand this process as that which should be used when students come to JA BizTown. Demonstrate it carefully to the participants. This may be an opportunity for you to laminate your poster and work directly on a sample poster. You will note that each transaction is written in two places as shown allowing students to show their math work. Doing this math “in their heads” is not a successful method for this age student. The grey line is used for each new balance only.

LOTS OF CHECKBOOK PRACTICE Lesson 3: Check It Out Check It Out practices continuously at end of every lesson. Practice Checkbook Materials at end of Citizen Guide. Scenarios must be written on board as not given anywhere else. LOTS OF CHECKBOOK PRACTICE Animation. Again message of continual Check It Outs starting here. From this point on in the curriculum, there will be additional Check It Out activities given at the end of each lesson. There are adequate worksheets at the end of the Citizen Guide to accommodate these practice activities. Each practice starts with a new balance in the Checkbook Register. Remind the kids that the checks they write from are their personal checkbook are for shopping whereas the checks that they fill out on the computer while at work are for the businesses.

JA BizTown Job Application Personal Information Education Hobbies Note that they, the teacher, will be the personnel manager assigning the various jobs. You may want to discuss placement for special education students: not placing all together in a single business, not assuming that they need to go into one business that might be easier, etc. This is also a good time to talk about the types of job responsibilities needed by a JA BizTown CEO, CFO, or any special jobs that your Area would like to discuss and recommend. It is also a good time to suggest that teachers might want to “think out of the box” a bit when assigning jobs and not stereotype students, but take a chance once in a while, and let a student show the skills that the teacher might not have expected to see. Some very pleasant surprises can take place if teachers will allow students the opportunities to try something different. Note that each student is allowed to apply for their top three jobs. The teacher will decide which job each gets. Job Preference 3 choices

JA BizTown Paycheck Check Gross Pay Payroll Tax Net Pay Stub This Transparency as it stands is missing a business name and account number on the check itself. Please be on the lookout for a corrected Transparency which you can insert into this slide. Stub

Business Costs Sheet Salaries Operating Costs Total Business Costs This is a sample of a Business Costs Sheet. Go over this sheet thoroughly with the teachers. Note that the total of Salaries and Operating Costs is the amount that will be borrowed from the Bank. This is NOT the amount that the business will owe to the Bank. Interest will be added in the amount of 5% and will be calculated as part of the technology program on-site and on the Promissory Note, also found in this BizPrep booklet. Operating Costs Total Business Costs

Language Arts Connection Lesson 3: Language Arts Connection Friendly Letters Letters should be written at school and may be mailed at JA BizTown. Addresses are found behind the Curriculum Guide, Visit Information Tab. You will need to decide whether or not your Area will be delivering mail (Delivery Center). If so, you will want to discuss this page and recommend that these letters be completed in school, addressed in school (see Business Address Information found behind the Visit Information Tab), and brought to be mailed. If you will not be operating a Delivery Center, having a Carrier, etc., you will of course, want to delete this slide and tell teachers that letters should not be brought with them on the day of the visit. This possibility is mentioned in the curriculum so you NEED TO DISCUSS IT and inform teachers as to what they should do concerning letters.

Final Business Team Preparation Citizen Checklist Final Business Team Preparation This checklist is for businesses and student employees to use when making final preparations to come to JA BizTown. Using this Checklist assures that all businesses and students are adequately prepared.

JA BizTown™ On-site Visit

Facility Layout

Unit 5: Debriefing What Did I Learn About Business? What Did I Learn About Economics?

Sample Business Letter Option: Incorporate technology by having the students visit the JA BizTown blog http://jabiztowncharlotte.blogspot.com/ Where they can write/blog a letter as well as read other letters kids have blogged on the website. Let the teachers know that if they have trouble interacting with the Blog site that they may need to let their school I.T. person know. The I.T. person may need to submit a request to get the blog to be considered a safe site by the CMS firewall.

Don’t forget... Please either fax your JA BizTown Prep paperwork to 704-563-4864 or bring it in with you the day of your JA BizTown visit with the completely filled out JA BizPrep packets. Remember to have the student citizens fill out their checkbooks to match the example in the prep packets that you received with the curriculum. Please let your volunteers know that parking is not validated. Directions are located on our website here at www.jacarolinas.org in pdf form to print out an it includes the cost of area garages. ALSO… We now have a Teacher e-Newsletter that goes out monthly to participating 4th grade teachers. If you have not received the e-Newsletter and would like to, email your request to hdoyle@jacarolinas.com .
