Taking a Bite out of the Apple: Engagement of LEND Trainees Using iPads and Technology Tracy White, MA, BSN, RN; Janet H. Willis, MPH, RD; and Tracye Woodfin, MS Virginia Commonwealth University Background Noting the positive outcomes of using iPad mobile technology in an Autism Assessment Clinic, Va-LEND faculty paused to consider how this could impact student engagement and learning. With its compact size and portability, iPads are an ideal tool to incorporate into the LEND curriculum. Free and easy- to-use resources such as applications (apps) and web-based software make adoption and engagement by trainees and faculty successful. Conclusion Virginia Commonwealth University, Center for Teaching Excellence, and Va-LEND engage together to promote the use of technology within the curriculum and delivery of training content. Mobile devices interface with technology in the form of apps and free on-line software. In the hands of Va-LEND trainees and faculty, it promotes active engagement among participants in any setting and enhance learning outcomes. In a budget conscious economy, free technologies are available, user friendly, and can have a significant impact on how trainees engage in or embrace LEND curriculums. Training and empowering trainees to use these acquired technological skills will benefit their professional practice. Apps are used in clinical assessments. Apps are used in the Family Mentorship Program. Apps are used to develop e-portfolios. iPads are used to access Va- LEND’s mobile webpage. iPads are used by trainees to evaluate courses at the end of each class. Through a competitive award, LEND obtained 20 iPads and successfully used them with an array of apps for didactic, clinical and family mentorship experiences. Faculty developed a “toolbox” of free useful apps for participants to use with the iPad. Initially, Evernote, Tango, Micromedex, and I- Translate were selected. Trainees are now encouraged to add others they find useful. Links are provided to the Center for Disease Control for growth and developmental milestones. Trainees are able to access a developmental screening tool through their iPads. Positive feedback after the first year prompted expansion of technology in the fall of 2013 to include development of a mobile webpage using free WordPress software. The mobile webpage is a one-stop portal for all content and includes: o a developmental screening tool developed by Dr. Pasquale Accardo, LEND Director o faculty and student directory o progress checklist o calendar o link to University Blackboard Site The development of an electronic or e-portfolio replaces traditional hard copy version and provides a highly portable, dynamic, creative, fluid, and reflective digital space for trainees to document knowledge, growth and leadership. E-Portfolio Mobile Webpage Outcomes Applications (Apps) o Apps are used in clinical assessments, even to interact with a child who is difficult to engage. Apps can also be used to help with translations in clinic. o Apps are used for trainees to take notes. o Apps are utilized to access the mobile web-page. o Apps are used in courses to evaluate classes at the end of each class. o Apps are used in Family Mentorship for video journals and video interaction with faculty.
