Janet Murray & Gaming An illusion of two worlds Presented by Dennis Wenstr ö m MAT 103, fall 2011

Janet H. Murray Janet H. Murray is an professor at Georgia Institute of Technology. She also is the author of the book Hamlet on the Holodeck, the future of Narrative in Cyberspace

Janet's major ideas is that in all kinds of media and gaming are there different kinds of storytelling.

“Lack of story depth makes even wildly popular figures like the Mario Brothers or the Mortal Kombat fighters impossible to translate into successful movie heroes.” Super Mario Bros. (1993)

“Games hold the potential for more powerful moments of revelation than they currently make use of.” - Janet H. Murray

“We could experience the virtual world not as a flat screen but as a virtual reality (VR) “pod” that surrounds us on six sides, like the holodeck.” Wrote Janet. H Murray in her book The british TV show The Gadget Show did exactly that.

A unique FPS simulator that turns gaming into reality as you move, aim, fire and get shot within a 360-degree immersive environment.

MMORPG – MMORTS – RTS – RPG – FPS Different kinds of games for all kinds of people Massively multiplayer online role-playing game Massively multiplayer online real time strategy Real time strategy Role-playing game First Person Shooter

There are all kinds of games out there, and parents are afraid that video games will affect their children. The Nintendo CEO said otherwise.

Most people say video games are bad for you, that you easily get addicted and that violent games makes you violent in real life.

Then why do over people go to computer festivals like Dreamhack in Sweden? We gather there to socialize and play games together, or watch e-sports and do other activities Farmville – one of the most addictive Facebook games there is.

Many puzzle games take advantage of this slower pace to offer a richer level of story satisfaction Portal 2

Second life is a virtual reality that people can go to and be whoever they want to be. Like how Captain Janeway in Star Trek escaped to another reality with the hologram program.

E-sport have become very popular and brings out people around the world to watch players compete against each other.

You can gain some competence skills through gaming. Some employers might even look into what you play on your free time for skills that can be useful in their line of work. RTS = Strategic analysis MMORPG = Communication skills, leadership Puzzle = Problem solving skills

Today we use 3D glasses for gaming. How will it be in the future?

With the technology we have today we might not be able to “jack” in to the Cyberspace. But it's just a question until we will.
