STUDENT LEADS Gifted and Talented, Magnet and Credit by Exam

GT The Vanguard (G/T) program is designed for G/T students in grades K-12 who excel in general intellectual ability in combination with creative/productive thinking and/or leadership ability.

Gifted and Talented The Vanguard Neighborhood programs are designed to meet the needs of G/T students in grades K-12 at their neighborhood (zoned) schools.(zoned) Vanguard Neighborhood programs provide a differentiated curriculum by modifying the depth, complexity, and pacing of the general school program

What is giftedness? Students identified by professionally qualified persons, who perform at, or show the potential for performing at, a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment. Students capable of high performance include those with demonstrated achievement and/or potential ability in any of the following areas:  Exhibits high performance capability in an intellectual, creative, or artistic area  Possesses an unusual capacity for leadership;  Excels in a specific academic field

How do I know if I might be GT? It is a combination of characteristics. Some signs that a student might be gifted include, but are not limited to: Extraordinary memory compared to peers Highly curious Highly creative Exhibits abstract reasoning and problem solving skills Draws inferences, grasps underlying principles Initiates projects Discusses things in detail, elaborates

The G/T identification of a student can be initiated in 3 ways: parent nomination that leads to a Vanguard (G/T) application teacher nomination that leads to parent completion of a Vanguard (G/T) application student nomination (age appropriate) that leads to parent completion of a Vanguard (G/T) application In any case, the parent must complete application and submit to main office

Vanguard Neighborhood Admission Process Complete Vanguard Neighborhood application  GT-Application (  click on the link to see app) GT-Application Submit to Wheatley in Main office Student will be notified if any testing is necessary All qualified students are provided services in their neighborhood school

Magnet A Magnet Program offers a specialized focus of study designed to appeal to a wide variety of student interests and needs.

Wheatley Magnet Wheatley offers a Science Magnet. Science magnets offer coursework in specialized areas of science to prepare students for college in a particular area of science. Theme: Technology Careers

What is the difference between Magnet and Vanguard (G/T)? Vanguard (G/T) program refers to any of the programs in the district designed to serve the needs of gifted and talented (G/T) children. So, when you see the word Vanguard, just think G/T. All schools have a Vanguard (G/T) program. If you are identified as GT and you transfer to another school in the district, you will still be identified as GT. Magnet programs offer a specialized focus of study designed to appeal to a wide variety of student interests and needs just like fine arts or science (and in Wheatley’s case, Technology Careers). The programs and themes vary by campus.

When do I apply for magnet? Applications Accepted November 3, 2012  Applications for all Magnet programs accepted beginning November 3, 2012 Application Deadline January 11, 2013  Applications for Magnet programs must be postmarked no later than January 11, 2013, for guaranteed consideration in the first round. Parent Notification Day March 22, 2013  Application status information mailed to parents on March 22, 2013 (postmarked) Parent Response Deadline April 5, 2013  Parents must notify Wheatley "intent to accept" by April 5, 2013 (postmarked)

Credit by Exam The Credit by Examination (CBE) is a testing program that offers students without prior instruction the opportunity to advance to the next grade level or test out of a high school course. Also, CBE helps students with prior instruction to be placed in their appropriate grade level. Parents interested in this program should direct their questions to their school counselor or principals. A representatives will contact student assessment to make arrangements for testing.

Purpose The CBE helps to determine if the student is adequately prepared for placement to a more advanced level of instruction and insures proper grade placement for students entering HISD from home schools, unaccredited private schools or foreign schools, and for whom no records are available. The CBE also allows students the opportunity to pass a failed course. There is a cost, however students can also earn credits online through Grad Lab at no cost to the student.
