Vision 2018

The Purpose: Scouting exists to actively engage and support young people in their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society.

LookwideUK: Offers personal and social development programmes to young people aged between 10 and 19 Works with young people in danger of disengaging from education, youth services and their communities Supports young people through the Values of Scouting and Scout Method Beneficiaries are not required to make the Promise but are required to sign up to a ‘group contract’ that promotes the Values of: Integrity, Respect, Care and Co-operation

The Lookwide Team Chief Executive: Development Tutors: Nicky Sargeant Dave Smith Administrator: Adam Patterson Stewart Ellison Volunteer: Marie Elliot Jeff High

The LookwideUK method: Scouting takes place when young people, in partnership with adults, work together and: Enjoy what they are doing and have fun Take part in activities indoors and outdoors Learn by doing Take responsibility and make choices Undertake new and challenging activities Lookwide offers a balanced programme that promotes inclusion and celebrates achievement using the same methods.

LookwideUK Promotes Inclusion: Promotes Inclusion: Team working, communicating, contributing, co-operating Relationship building, managing behaviour and conflict resolution Outdoor adventure Volunteering Information Advice and Guidance Employability skills, job search and access to apprenticeships

LookwideUK Celebrates Achievement: Open College Network accreditation Emergency First Aid at Work Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award John Muir Environmental Award Princes’ Trust XL Presentations, certificates, education packs and display boards

Our Beneficiaries Between 2004 and 2011 LookwideUK worked with approx 1200 young people. In LookwideUK engaged a further 146 young people. They often come from difficult backgrounds, both at school and at home. These young people are ‘not prepared’ and struggle to cope on a day to day basis. Northumberland Scouts is helping them to ‘become prepared’.

Current Projects Getting Connected: Big Lottery funded for 5 years Delivering to NEET’s (Not in Employment, Education or Training), School Inclusion and Youth Engagement Interventions of between 6 weeks and a full school year Geordie at War: Heritage Lottery funded for 18 months Delivering to similar groups through heritage and local culture Exploring the impact of conflict from Roman times through to the present day, including language, employment and communities

Ryan attends Geordie at War sessions once a week. In January Ryan would not take part in group activities, although he would always attend and watch. This caused some gripes amongst his peers. Eventually his peers came to understand Ryan’s needs and started to encourage and involve him more. Last month Ryan put on his overalls and work gloves for the first time and got stuck in. His support worker says : “Looking back Ryan would not do a thing no matter what we said, now he might have a little grumble then gets on with it, he has also mixed well with the group”.

Dan joined us on a 7 day John Muir Award programme Dan was an outcast at school with low self-esteem and poor confidence; he had a noticeable stutter that reflected his nervousness. During his time with Lookwide his relationship and involvement with the group improved greatly. To complete the John Muir Award Dan was required to stand up in front of 20 of his peer group as part of a presentation. Dan nearly pulled out, but the trusting relationship that he had developed with Stew allowed him to overcome his fears; he spoke confidently, expanded fluently on the written piece he had prepared, and didn’t stammer throughout.

Where is Lookwide going? LookwideUK will share and contribute to Northumberland Scouts Vision 2018 Scouting in 2018 will: Make a positive impact in our communities Prepare young people to be active citizens Embrace and contribute to social change Scouting in 2018 will be: Shaped by young people in partnership with adults Enjoyed by more young people and more adult volunteers As diverse as the communities in which we live Members of Scouting in 2018 will feel: Empowered Valued Proud

Moving Forward: A new home More volunteers Reaching more young people Reaching more communities Empowered, Valued and Proud Learning Outside the Classroom and Alternative Provision Networking and partnership working Accredited learning and quality assurance of learning
