Physical and Chemical Properties and Changes

Physical Properties: The characteristics of a substance that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance.

Chemical Properties: Chemical properties describe how substances can form new substances.

Physical Change: Physical change is a change that in the physical properties of a substance but, does not change the identity of the substance.

Physical Changes Clues of Physical Changes: A change in shape. A change in size. A change in the state or phase of matter. Dissolving Sometimes a color change. Melting, freezing, boiling, evaporation, condensation, and sublimation.

Scientific Terms Malleability Ductility Luster Solubility Viscosity Buoyancy Density Mass Volume

Examples of Physical Changes: Ice melting A pencil sharpened Water boiling The formation of dew Dissolving Kool-Aid A candle melting

Examples of Physical Changes:

Chemical Change: Chemical change is the change of one substance into another substance.

Chemical Changes Clues of Chemical Changes: Foaming, fizzing. A change in odor. Rapid production of heat, light, or sound. Color change. Formation of precipitate. New substance formed.

Scientific Terms Flammability Combustibility Oxidation Reactivity

Examples of Chemical Changes: Photosynthesis Fireworks exploding Yeast bread rising A bike rusting Antacid dissolved in water Anything burning Rotting food Silver tarnishing

Examples of Chemical Changes
