Leadership Through Empowerment Raymond J. McNulty, President International Center for Leadership in Education

Why Empowerment? Aren’t the leaders trained to do this leadership stuff? Don’t complex problems demand a complex set of specialists to solve them? I am a teacher, parent, student, community person, business person.. ……I have my role you have yours!

Expertise can sometimes be a road block to problem solving Expertise can sometimes be a road block to problem solving. Experts see their points as critical to resolution, without sometimes valuing the thinking of others.

“In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities; in the expert’s mind there are few.” -Shurnyu Suzuki

Why good spread sheets make bad strategies. We live in a world obsessed with science, predictability and control. If we can’t measure it, it doesn’t count!

We must consider the possibility that if we can’t measure something, it might be the very most important thing!

Mary Dunn’s kindergarten is a busy place Mary Dunn’s kindergarten is a busy place. While she works with John in one corner of the room, Sally spills her paints in another. Sally begins to cry softly. Linda, another student, comes over to Sally, puts her arm around her, and then helps to clean up the paint.

Principal Arlene Gore always includes a session in her faculty meetings for teachers to raise issues. Today, Chuck Green complains about how the students don’t move along in the hallways between classes. This causes large groups blocking the way, loud rough housing, and potential intimidation for younger students. Arlene asks everyone to take a few minutes to write down why he or she thinks students behave in this way. After sharing in small groups and then in the full group, about six teachers volunteer to form a team to study the situation. One teacher suggests that one or two of the worst offending students be invited to work with the team. This idea meets with a mixed reaction.

What does empowerment look like at the highest levels?

It’s not us against them! Talking with kids… It’s not us against them!

Empowering the students Day of Pink: A day to stand against bullying, harassment, and discrimination 25

Period 1 Day of Pink is a day of action, born when a youth in a high school in Cambridge, Nova Scotia was bullied because he wore a pink shirt to school. His fellow students decided to stand up to bullying; and hundreds of students came to school wearing pink to show support for diversity and stopping discrimination. What do you feel makes you different or unique? Have you ever felt this puts you at risk for being bullied or harassed?

Empowering the students Quick-Writes: (3-5 minute writings) Describe a time you have been made fun of or harassed for being or looking different. How did you deal with it? Have you ever teased or made fun of someone for being or looking different, or witnessed someone else doing this and didn’t speak up? Write about why you think you did that, and thinking back, what should you have done? 27

Quad D leadership is self- maintaining through the empowerment of everyone, creating leadership density

CULTURE TRUMPS STRATEGY

Sustainability is about the relationship between people, their purpose and their place.

What Works Best to Empower? REQUIRE MANDATE FORCE EXCITE CREATE PASSION MOTIVATE

Quadrant D Leaders function in each quadrant, continually striving to influence school stakeholders to spend most of their time in Quadrant D.

Agenda Role of Empowerment Self-Knowledge, Vision, Mission

Leaders (position type) must know a lot about themselves before they can empower others.

What are your… Beliefs and Values Prejudices Fears Skills Weaknesses

When you know yourself, you can begin to embrace a process to establish a mission, vision and set of values.

Quad D Leadership Framework Vision 6 5 4 3 2 Empowerment 1 1 2 3 4 5

MISSION WHY WE EXIST….

VISION WHAT WE WANT TO BE…

VALUES HOW WE WILL ACT…

From Butler Tech Is it ethical? Can we afford it? Will it improve student performance? Will it improve student satisfaction? Will it improve staff satisfaction? Will it improve stakeholder satisfaction?

Agenda Role of Empowerment Self-Knowledge, Vision, Mission Relationship Climate

Being honest and supportive is empowering to self and others Respect the empowered people. Things will go wrong. Laugh and move on.

Agenda Role of Empowerment Self-Knowledge, Vision, Mission Relationship Climate Courage

Courage Be true to your beliefs. Leadership takes heart and stomach. If you empower them to lead, then trust them to lead.

Agenda Role of Empowerment Self Knowledge, Vision, Mission Relationship Climate Courage Conflict Resolution

Conflict Resolution Be clear who will have the final say. Seek advice, opinions and data. Do they need training in consensus and decision making?

What Is Consensus?

Consensus is… Finding a proposal acceptable enough that all members can support it . No member opposes it.

Is not… A unanimous vote – a consensus may not represent everyone’s first priorities. A majority vote – in a majority vote, only the majority gets something they are happy with. Everyone totally satisfied.

Requires… Time Active participation of all group members Skills in communication: listening, conflict resolution, discussion facilitation Creating thinking and open-mindedness

Decision Funnel Manager/Leader Level Team Member Lay out process and criteria by which decisions are to be reached. Embrace the decisions. Accept responsibility for decision-making process. 1 Participation and acknowledgement of consensual process. Work on outcome till it feels right. Embrace the decision. 2 Active participation. Voice opinions. Support decision. Listen and discuss participant’s input. Make decision. 3 Time Needed Commitment To Decision Listen to input. Make clear decisions. Voice opinions on time. 4 Give a direct command. Listen carefully. 5

Should we allow cell phones in school? How you ask a question is important? Should we allow cell phones in school?

Ask open ended questions rather than yes or no questions. Such as, why do you suppose students want to use their cell phones?
