Introduction Coaxial cable, or coax, is an electrical cable with an inner conductor surrounded by a flexible, tubular insulating layer, surrounded by a tubular conducting shield. The term coaxial comes from the inner conductor and the outer shield sharing the same geometric axis. Coaxial cable was invented by English engineer and mathematician Oliver Heaviside, who first patented the design in Department of CE/IT

Coaxial Cable A coaxial cable is an unbalanced circuit. The frequency range of coax is 100 kHz- 500 MHz. Coax diameter can be as narrow as 0.15 inches or wide as 0.75 inches, depending on their type. Department of CE/IT

Types Generally, two types of coaxial cables are used: – Baseband Coaxial Cable – Broad Coaxial Cable Department of CE/IT

Baseband Coaxial Cable Baseband coaxial cable is a 50 ohm cable which is capable of digital transmission. A baseband cable can cover a small distance due to the accuracy requirements of digital transmission. Department of CE/IT

Broadband Coaxial Cable Broadband coaxial cable is a 75 ohm cable and it is used in analog transmission of data. These cables are used upto 300 MHz (upto 450 MHz sometimes ) and can run for nearly 100 kms due to analog nature of signals. Department of CE/IT

Uses Coaxial cables are used as transmission lines and are constructed to provide protection against outside signal interference. Coaxial cables are used primarily for CATV and other wide band and video application. Department of CE/IT

Advantages Cable lengths are longer than UTP/STP Less susceptible to interference than UTP Hubs are not required, direct connection Department of CE/IT

Disadvantages Thickness is very difficult to install More expensive than UTP difficult to troubleshoot Department of CE/IT

Application Coaxial cable is used as a transmission line for radio frequency signals, in applications such as connecting radio transmitters and receivers with their antennas, computer network (Internet) connections, and distributing cable television signals. Department of CE/IT
