Chapter 1 Types of Skiing There are many types of skiing. They require different skill levels. Beginners can try cross country or downhill. Long jump is for more experienced skiers. Once you get good enough you can try competitive skiing. You can race for a school or you can try out for the Olympics. It takes many years of training to represent your country. mountain. Downhill skiing is when you traverse a mountain or a hill and gravity helps you go down the slope. Cross country skiing involves skiing over a snow covered land using you leg and arm strength to push off. This is a skier participating in a long jump event. This is an picture of people cross country skiing.

Different Types of Skis There are many different types of skis for all the different types of skiing. Race skis for downhill are longer and a bit harder to turn which leads to more speed. Cross country skis are lighter and skinnier for helping to easily skim across the snow. Skis for jumping are the longest and widest for stability in landing the big jumps. Skis are measured in centimeters and have bindings that attach to appropriate boots that the skier wears.

Types of Hills At ski areas there are many levels of ski slopes for the beginner thru the expert. There is a uniform labeling system that most ski resorts use to help the skier identify the slopes that are just right for them. Green circles are for beginners. Blue squares are intermediate slopes. More advanced skiers look for the black diamond hills. Expert skiers go to the to the toughest hills labeled double black diamond.

Obviously, skiing requires specialized equipment. Skis are picked out based on ones ability and size. The type of skiing one is going to do dictates the basic type of ski. In addition, a binding is attached to the ski with metal screws so that the ski boot attaches to the skis. A ski boot is chosen that fits comfortably and provides support to the foot and ankle. Cross country boots are softer and not quite as big as downhill ski boots. Ski poles are used to provide balance and the ability to push off by planting the pole in the snow. Skiers should also wear an appropriate fitting helmet and usually goggles or sunglasses. Warm winter clothing is needed which includes ski jacket, gloves and ski pants.

When skiing try to avoid skiing over rocks or tree branches. Also avoid thin snow as these things can cause damage to the bottom of the ski change how the skis work. When storing your skis you should hang them or carefully place them against a wall. The skis and bindings should be inspected once a year by a qualified technician who can fix any binding problems or repair any deep scratches on the bottoms of the skis.

Now you know the basics about skiing. Get out there and try it. Take a lesson from a ski instructor. It is a great sport! Here are some superb ski areas in Michigan to visit so that you can learn to ski: Schuss Mountain, Boyne Mountain, Boyne Highlands, Nubs Nob and Crystal Mountain.
