Take Home Folders One side should be for papers that stay at home and the other side should be for papers (homework, homework sheet, etc.) that need to be returned to school. It is important that this folder comes back and forth from home and school everyday!

Homework Policy It is the students responsibility to turn in homework and their signed homework sheet each day. There will be a fine ($ from our mini economy) if homework is not turned in the next day. There will be a separate fine ($ from our mini economy) if the homework sheet is not signed. Remember it is the students responsibility to have a parent sign the homework sheet.

There are 3 parts to reading workshop Independent Reading: Students read a text, usually of their own choosing, and respond in their reading notebooks. Guided Reading: Students work with me in small groups where I select a text at their reading level. Literature Study: Groups of students discuss various aspects of a text and sometimes work on projects to extend and share their learning. Reading Workshop

Reading Notebooks Students share their thinking through letters as they read. Here are a few examples: Recap stories Reflect on what they are reading Comment on the mood of the story Make connections to other books and movies Comment on how the character changed Give reasons for abandoning the story Discuss genre Each journal entry will be graded: Understanding the text (and if they didn’t understand then address that issue in their writing) Clearly communicates ideas Spelling, grammar, capitalization, punctuation Voice (a response that is interesting and uniquely the students) Awareness of characteristics and structure of different kinds of texts

Writer’s Workshop There are 3 elements for writing workshop Independent Writing: Students work individually and silently on their own writing. Guided Writing: Students work with me in small groups to work on craft, strategies, and similar skills that need work. Investigations: Students explore a piece of literature or a content- area topic in depth, using reading, writing, and a variety of media resources, including technology.

Writer’s Notebooks The writer’s notebook is a place for students to collect observations, ideas, feelings, facts, lists – just about every kind of thought that can be recorded in writing. A writer’s notebook gives you a place to live like a writer, not just in school during writing time, but wherever you are, at any time of the day. (Fletcher 1996)

Word Study Learning about words is not a simple matter of committing them to memory. This is our spelling. Although we don’t just memorize words we learn a certain pattern or principle for the week. Students will keep a word study folder here at school. Students will fill out two index cards (1 for school and 1 for home) with 10 words. Students choose 5 words from their frequently used words list and 5 from the lesson.

Math We will continue with the Everyday Mathematics curriculum (starting the year with geometry). Students will need to continue memorizing their multiplication facts. They will be assessed on them at least 4 days a week. It is important that students learn their facts in order to complete long division, fractions, and multiple digit multiplication.

Social Studies In social studies, we cover Indiana’s History. We learn about: ► the first people in Indiana. ► how Indiana became a state. ► Indiana’s Government and many more facts. ► Indiana History is also our classroom theme for the year. Students sit in groups of 4 or 5 and these teams are named from facts about Indiana.
