Periodic Table:  A systematic catalog of elements.  Elements are arranged in order of atomic number.

Periodicity When one looks at the chemical properties of elements, one notices a repeating pattern of reactivities.

Periodic Table  The rows on the periodic chart are periods.  Columns are groups.  Elements in the same group have similar chemical properties.

Periods:  arranged horizontally across the periodic table (rows 1-7)  These elements have the same number of valence shells (Energy Levels). 2nd Period 6th Period

 Family (or Group):  arranged vertically down the periodic table (columns or group, or 1-8 A,B)  These elements have the same number electrons in the outer most shells, the valence shell. Alkali Family: 1 e- in the valence shell Alkali Family: 1 e- in the valence shell Halogen Family: 7 e- in the valence shell Halogen Family: 7 e- in the valence shell

Groups These five groups are known by their names.

Periodic Table Nonmetals are on the right side of the periodic table (with the exception of H).

Periodic Table Metalloids border the stair-step line (with the exception of Al and Po).

Periodic Table Metals are on the left side of the chart.

Periodic Table: The three broad Classes Main, Transition, Rare Earth  Main (Representative), Transition metals, lanthanides and actinides (rare earth)

Trend in Atomic Radius  Atomic Radius:  The size of an atom as determine by the boundaries of the valence e-.  Largest atomic species are those found in the left bottom corner Why does the trend decrease across a period? Why does it increase down a group? As you move across a period the # of protons increases. The positive charge of the protons attracts the electrons, pulling the electrons in tighter As you move down the group the size of atom increases

Trend in Ionization Potential Ionization potential: The energy required to remove the valence electron from an atom. Largest toward top right corner since these atoms hold on to their valence e- the tightest.

Trend in Electron Affinity Electron Affinity: The energy released when an electron is added to an atom. Most favorable toward top right corner

Summary of Trends Atomic Radius: Increases Ionization Energy: increases Electron Affinity: Increases
