INFORMATION SOLUTIONS Mary L. Van Allen 21 September 2005 Open Access Journals and citation patterns International Seminar on Open Access for Developing Countries Panel 3: Visibility, accessibility, quality, and impact of journals

Copyright 2004 Thomson Scientific 2 INFORMATION SOLUTIONS What is “Open Access”? OA Definition from the Budapest Principles “Free availability on the public Internet, permitting end users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use t them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the Internet itself.” OA can be archival repositories, Web documents, online dissertations or reports, preprints as well as journals. Continuum includes: PLoS Biology, SciELO (Brazil), J-Stage (Japan), SPARC, NIH-PubMed Central, an author web site Today’s discussion centers on Open Access journals, indexed by Thomson (ISI) Overview

Copyright 2004 Thomson Scientific 3 INFORMATION SOLUTIONS Are OA journals growing in acceptance by the research community, i.e. are OA journals being cited? Are OA journals citing other OA publications? What is the impact of OA journals? What can citation analysis tell us about the visibility, accessibility, quality, and impact of OA journals? Examine distribution across regions and fields. Consider the field impact Sampled selected journals with 5 years of coverage and citation data from the 270 OA journals covered in Web of Science –Journal summary Citing summary by journal Cited summary by journal Methodology

Copyright 2004 Thomson Scientific 4 INFORMATION SOLUTIONS The OA journal landscape OA journals are a small percentage of journal but growing in presence Regional distribution of OA journal publication –34 countries with OA publications Field distribution of OA publications –Dominated by Medical Sciences –Specific fields pushing forward in OA: Medical (general & internal) Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Mathematics Chemistry Veterinary Medicine

Copyright 2004 Thomson Scientific 5 INFORMATION SOLUTIONS Field Impact and OA Journals

Copyright 2004 Thomson Scientific 6 INFORMATION SOLUTIONS Field Impact and OA Journals A closer sort of those fields with 3+ OA journals show that the OA journals that are performing better than the combined field of traditional and OA in three fields: –Medical fields –Mathematics –Public, Environmental and Occupational Health

Copyright 2004 Thomson Scientific 7 INFORMATION SOLUTIONS Field Impact and OA Journals Review of the Mathematics journals shows: –Country distribution: 4 in North America, 2 in Europe, 2 in Asia, 1 in India –5 of the 9 journals perform 6% or better than the total impact for the field Questions: –Are OA math journals being cited more quickly than traditional math journals? –Math papers typically cited older references – is this changing due to increased visibility of OA math journals?

Copyright 2004 Thomson Scientific 8 INFORMATION SOLUTIONS Citation Analysis of Selected OA Journals Selected 6 journals: –Annals of Agricultural and Environmental Medicine –Journal of Occupational Health –Salud Publica de Mexico –Revista de Saude Publica –Leprosy Review –Memorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz Examine the citation summaries as well as the sample set metrics Citing summary by journal Cited summary by journal – are OA using other OA journals?

Copyright 2004 Thomson Scientific 9 INFORMATION SOLUTIONS Citation Analysis of OA Journals, Distribution of papers and cites within the sample set

Copyright 2004 Thomson Scientific 10 INFORMATION SOLUTIONS Citation Analysis of OA Journals, Most cited articles from the sample set

Copyright 2004 Thomson Scientific 11 INFORMATION SOLUTIONS Citation Analysis of OA Journals, Cited Reference Summary by Country, sorted by Total Cites Our sample set used journals published in these countries

Copyright 2004 Thomson Scientific 12 INFORMATION SOLUTIONS Citation Analysis of OA Journals, Citing Reference Summary by Country, sorted by Total Cites –Our sample set was cited by authors in these countries South America, as a region, is citing OA journals –Brazil 641 –Mexico 155 –Argentina 76 –Columbia 40 –Venezuela 34 –Chile 22 Total 968

Copyright 2004 Thomson Scientific 13 INFORMATION SOLUTIONS Citation Analysis of OA Journals, Cited Reference Summary by Journal Country, sorted by Total Cites –Our sample set used these journals in their papers This is a combination of OA and traditional journals. Notice that the OA sample set authors use a wide variety of reference sources.

Copyright 2004 Thomson Scientific 14 INFORMATION SOLUTIONS Citation Analysis of OA Journals, Citing Reference Summary by Journal Country, sorted by Total Cites –Our sample set was referenced by articles in these journals. This is a combination of OA and traditional journals. Next question: what are the cited and citing patterns within the OA groups?

Copyright 2004 Thomson Scientific 15 INFORMATION SOLUTIONS Citation Analysis of OA Journals, Do OA journals use other OA journals as cited references? Our sample of 6 OA journals used 91 OA journals as cited references or about 1/3 of the OA group of journals Ex: OA journal Environmental Health Perspectives was cited 182 times by 1 or some of the 6 in the OA sample. Just over 2900 papers from OA journals, in the period, , cited OA journals These are the top 20 OA journals that the 6 sample OA journals cited. (The 6 sample journals were excluded from the list.)

Copyright 2004 Thomson Scientific 16 INFORMATION SOLUTIONS Citation Analysis of OA Journals, What OA journals are citing the sample set of 6 OA journals? Our sample of 6 OA journals were cited by 51 OA journals in 5 years. 713 papers cited our sample of 6 OA journals These are the top 25 journals that cited our sample set of 6 journal. (The 6 sample journals were excluded from the list.) This could require more time to evaluate, depending on a field’s citation life cycle.

Copyright 2004 Thomson Scientific 17 INFORMATION SOLUTIONS Citation Analysis of OA Journals, What journals in general are citing the sample set of 6 OA journals? Our sample of 6 OA journals were cited by 2114 papers in 652 journals. These are the top 25 journals that cited our sample set of 6 journal. (The 6 sample journals were excluded from the list.) Areas are citing OA journals –Tropical Medicine –Infectious Diseases –Public, Environmental & Occupational Health

Copyright 2004 Thomson Scientific 18 INFORMATION SOLUTIONS Conclusions OA is global in visibility, accessibility and impact and continues to grow. OA journals act as cited and citing references within the OA world Some fields are taking a lead in using OA – Medicine and Math examples There could be changes in citation life cycles with references to more recent rather than older material (Math) More time will reveal stronger trends for OA usage OA is a burgeoning area which provides a new gateway of communication in the scientific community. As with many advancements, it is not always the expected results that create the most interest, but the unexpected results that lead to new paths of inquiry. We will continue to watch closely as the impact and influence of OA reveals itself in further citation analysis studies. Observations
