26th Oct rd ILIAS GW Meeting - ICL - London4 of 18 Support to Research Infrastructures Existing Activities (present in FP6 as well): –transnational access –integrating activities –research e-infrastructures Implementation: –bottom-up calls for proposals open to all fields of science –in close cooperation with the thematic areas STREGA (R&D) GWA (Networking)

26th Oct rd ILIAS GW Meeting - ICL - London5 of 18 Support to Research Infrastructures New Activities and implementation: –support to construction of new infrastructures and major updates of existing ones based on the work conducted by the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) on the development of a European roadmap for new research infrastructures –stage 1: Supporting the preparatory phase –stage 2: Supporting the construction phase –design studies through bottom-up approach (calls for proposals) to promote the creation of new research infrastructures by funding exploratory awards and feasibility studies ESFRI may also recommend Design Studies

26th Oct rd ILIAS GW Meeting - ICL - London9 of 18 Support to new Research Infrastructures (TBA) Design studies –“The aim is to support conceptual design studies for new research infrastructures, which are of a clear European dimension and interest. Such studies should address all key questions which will help to assess the technical and financial feasibility of the proposed new facility. The outcome of the work should be a conceptual design report. Major upgrades of existing infrastructures may also be considered, when the end result is intended to be equivalent to, or be capable of replacing, a new infrastructure.” –“All fields of science and technologies could be considered. Projects identified as “emerging” by ESFRI are also welcome. This action would also foster the emergence of new organisational models designed to consolidate a sustainable approach to e- Infrastructures, in particular in the domain of grids and data repositories.” Construction of new infrastructure –to provide a catalytic and leveraging support for the construction of critical new facilities based on the ESFRI roadmap for new research infrastructures of pan-European interest. This activity will follow a two stage-approach: Stage 1 - support to the preparatory phase: This first phase will involve, in particular, the finalisation of the detailed construction plans, of the legal organisation, of the management and multi-annual financial planning Stage 2 - support to the implementation phase: this phase involves the actual construction, building on the technical, legal, administrative and financial agreement achieved during the preparatory phase between all stakeholders. Community financial support for the implementation phase will be very limited and may be indirect, e.g. through the Risk Sharing Finance Facility (RSFF), or direct, but only in few cases, where there is a critical need for such a support

26th Oct rd ILIAS GW Meeting - ICL - London10 of 18 Meanwhile the ESFRI roadmap is out Gravitational Waves are not in –Expected, but… –The document is confusing about near and far future projects

26th Oct rd ILIAS GW Meeting - ICL - London11 of 18 Astroparticle physics in FP6 Projects approved, in chronological order: –ILIAS (Integrated activities on GW, DM and DD) –KM3-Net (Design Study on neutrinos detector) –ASPERA (ERA-NET: roadmap maker) Project rejected: –HEAP-Net (Integrated activities on HE, -rays, cosmic rays) ApPEC –ApPEC promoted all the projects above

26th Oct rd ILIAS GW Meeting - ICL - London12 of 18 The future The FP7 will take action next year Continuing the positive experience of ILIAS  ILIAS-NEXT The GW community has submitted 4 LoIs –DS for 3 rd Generation Interferometer –Network –Construction DUAL –RTN for LISA

26th Oct rd ILIAS GW Meeting - ICL - London15 of 18 GW net Contact person –Raffaele Flaminio Objectives –To exchange of information: Commissioning of existing detectors Network data analysis With other fields of Astronomy (-rays, HE cosmic rays and ) –Development of the science case for future detectors –Investigation on the properties of gravitational wave sources –To support the access of more people from more countries to the existing infrastructures by means of a visitor program

26th Oct rd ILIAS GW Meeting - ICL - London16 of 18 MM Net Contact person –Geppo Cagnoli Some considerations –The most interesting fields related to GW are outside ILIAS (HEAP-Net) –The extend of the objectives depends on how much the Astroparticle community is excited by this project –Minimal goal: held meetings on astronomical sources of interest for several research fields Managing –One representative for each field –MMNet: a THNet working package?

26th Oct rd ILIAS GW Meeting - ICL - London17 of 18 Next meeting of ASPERA

26th Oct rd ILIAS GW Meeting - ICL - London18 of 18 Final comments Representatives of our field should attend the Astroparticle physics meetings –To tackle the possible misunderstanding coming up from the ESFRI roadmap What role in ILIAS-NEXT? –HEAP Net ? Next to come –The Valencia Meeting is very important for the future of MM Net –1 st draft of the MM Net proposal has to be ready by 15 th Dec. –Integration of ILIAS-NEX proposal by 15 th Jan. –Presentation of ILIAS-NEXT on 1 st March 2007
