If an iPhone and a coffee table had babies…

What is it?  Multi-touch tabletop interface  Interfaces with humans via touch and gesture  Interfaces with mobile devices wirelessly  Modified Vista PC

 Restaurants  Retail sales kiosks  Gaming/Artwork  Medical/Mapping  Personal multimedia storage  T-Mobile, Starwood Hotels & Resorts and Harrah’s Entertainment* *

“A lab that Microsoft has in Cambridge has just reported that they have created a system that not only allows touch interaction like Multitouch technology, but it also happens to allow you to twist, bend, pull and squeeze different parts of the interface in order to make certain things happen. As one person put it, this is almost like Multitouch on steroids.” Adaption to wall-mounted and podium-style surfaces “AT&T …April...twenty-two different Surface Computers in four of their stores in the country. When people place products on the Surface, information regarding the product will come on the screen. The customer can then directly interact with the Surface in order to change the information that is being shown or to bring up additional information regarding the product on the screen. The customer can even put two products on screen at the same time in order to do an on the spot comparison between the two products before choosing which one they want to purchase.”

 Holographic TV  Mid-air Video Displays  3D Display Monitor  Head-mount Displays

 Haloscreen  Is a holographic film which displays any image feed through a projector at a specific angle onto a transparent display  How it works  Light fed at a specific angle is displayed all other light is ignored

 Pros  bright and sharp image quality - even in brightly lit environments  Any type of projector can be used to cast the image  Accepts all inputs for playback on screen  Cons  projector sits on the floor about 5 feet behind the screen  Expensive

 Project video or images into mid-air  Supports  JPEG  MOV  FLASH  QUICKTIME  Text  MORE  Added Capabilities w/installed Software  Cursor control  Navigate and interact with simple content  Heliodisplay Video Heliodisplay Video

 Needs controlled lighting for best working conditions  Images become less visible under bright lighting  Wind and bright lights interfere with image visibility  image definition and fidelity are inferior to those seen on CRTs and LCDs  Expensive

 Idea is to view 3D technology without using glasses  Accomplished by:  Taking advantage of binocular disparity  Stereoscopic imaging  Odd Pixel Columns=Left Eye  Even Pixel Columns=Right Eye  Combine the 2 get 3D image from your brain focusing in on display

 Not much leeway in where you need to sit, but you don’t have to stay perfectly erect.  Still a bit blurry  Can make you feel nauseated  3D Projection can be viewed by only one person  Real-world applications supporting this technology is small

 Display device, worn on the head that has a small display optics  Uses  Video Gaming  Portable Entertainment  Private Movie Watching  Remote Internet / Images  Electronic Magnification Devices  Connect them to  Cell phones  IPods  VCR and DVD Players  Gaming Systems  Computers

 Sagging Issues  Becomes Heavy after periods of time  Can cause health problems such as:  Eye straining  Eye problems  Headaches  Seizures  Nausea  Vomiting

LASER KEYBOARDS

 Mac, PC, Blackberry, PDA, SmartPhone  Zipo / Small Cell Phone  Using two separate infrared beams  Industry Advantages  Surface Compatibility

 Lighting?

 Downside to Projection Keyboards?  Decreased Feedback  Lighting  Cost  $135 - $190  Popularity

GRAVITY/MOTION DEVICES

 Apple Sudden Motion Sensor Technology  Detection of:  Acceleration  Sudden change in movement  Vibrations  Parking the HD head

 Motion Sensing Controllers  Nintendo Wii  Silicon springs/wafers  Gravity  Capacitance  Not perfect  Johnny Chung Lee  Finger Tracking  Whiteboard

GESTURE BASED

 GestureTek – GroundFX  Flash interactive programming  C/C++ custom effects  Adding Sound  Advertising  Softkinetic  Xtr3D  Oblong Industries  3DV

 Other Uses  Sign Language Recognition  Facial Gestures  Robotics
