Outline Project Presentation Cyclops Technological Framework – Context & Rationale – Cyclops Architecture – Cyclops contribution to standards

CYber-Infrastructure for CiviL protection Operative ProcedureS (CYCLOPS) Specific Support Action of EGEE Start date: 01/06/2006 Duration: 24 months Web site: Contact person: Key words: GMES, GRID, Geospatial information, Civil Protection Collaboration with: – PREVIEW, Risk EOS, RISK-AWARE, BOSS4GMES, EGEE

Participant Partners – IMAA-CNR (Istituto di Metodologie per l’Analisi Ambientale del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche) – DDSC (Direction de la Défense et de la Sécurité Civiles) – TEI-CR (Technological Educational Institute of Crete) – SNBPC (Serviço Nacional de Bombeiros e Protecção Civil) – INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare) – DPC (Dipartimento della Protezione Civile) – CP-CH (Civil Protection of Chania Prefecture)

Context Needs – Civil Protection emergency management (forecasting, warning, management, assessment) involves different actors (Civil Protection systems, public bodies, research centers, etc.) – They need to share resources (computing, data, services, knowledge, expertise, etc) in a coordinated and effective way New technological instruments – Grid technologies have been developed to allow Virtual Organizations (such as Civil Protection) to share coordinated resources – Recent Geospatial Science development provides the basis for Geographic Information interoperability Challenge – To develop geospatial services on the top of a Grid-based infrastructure, building a cooperative platform for Civil Protection applications

Rationale Current Grid platforms were mainly designed for intensive processing and data management – offer high computing and storage capabilities Grid research is facing new important issues – sensor interaction – knowledge management – communication quality of service Need an enhancement to support complex Civil Protection applications

Rationale Civil Protection applications/systems have specific requirements: – to access infrastructure, run models and search information in real-time (RT) or near-real-time (NRT) privileging time of response instead of accuracy – to control sensors networks and acquisition systems and modify their acquisition strategy and processing chain – to share geospatial information that has complex characteristics: Huge amounts of remotely-sensed observations, which are multidimensional and frequently updated – To formalise the knowledge required to analyse data and provide decision-makers with effective information – To implement the strict data policy and the security requirements typical of dual systems (civil/military)

Objective & Research Strategies Conceive a complete Grid-based platform supporting Civil Protection applications – The CYCLOPS platform Many open issues must be addressed – Integration & Interoperability (with EGEE platform) Integrate sensor networks and acquisition systems in the EGEE platform Implement Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI) services in the EGEE platform – Define specific services for CP applications Define the advanced services (knowledge-based services, Quality-of-Service management, etc.) Define the Data Policy and Security services Define the generic Business Logic, Presentation and Fruition services

CYCLOPS Architecture CYCLOPS Platform CYCLOPS Infrastructure Processing Systems Infrastructure Data Systems GRID Platform (EGEE) Security Infrastructure Real Time and Near Real Time Applications for Civil Protection (Data integration, high-performance computing and distributed environment for simulations) Real Time and Near Real Time Applications for Civil Protection (Data integration, high-performance computing and distributed environment for simulations) Interoperability Platform Environmental Monitoring Resource Infrastructure Service for Earth Sciences Resources Grid Services for Earth Sciences Spatial Data Infrastructure Services Advanced Grid Services Business logic Services Presentation and Fruition Services

Architecture design and development This reference architecture is the essential framework to guide CYCLOPS studies and analyses As a Specific Support Action, CYCLOPS will not develop the infrastructure – To study and define the platform Future R&D projects will be directed towards the implementation of the specified infrastructure

Contribution to standards GRID community – test and validate the middleware re-engineered by EGEE and EGEE-2 in compliance with the current open standards (GGF, OMII Europe) Geospatial science community – INSPIRE (The INfrastructure for SPatial InfoRmation in Europe ) – GEOSS (Global Earth Observation System of Systems) – OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) Risk and Crisis Management Working Group Sensor Web Enablement Working Group Earth Observation Working Group Civil Protection community – GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security)

Main Activities Coordination with EGEE activities – Coordinated by INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare) Civil Protection system analysis – Coordinated by DDSC (Direction de la Défense et de la Sécurité Civiles) Research and Innovation Strategies definition – Coordinated by IMAA-CNR (Istituto di Metodologie per l’Analisi Ambientale del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche) WP 2 WP 3 WP 4

WP 4: Research and Innovation strategies definition Objective – To define the research and innovation guidelines toward the definition of a e- Infrastructure for Civil Protection applications Main Actions – To define CP community requirements for Grid platforms Define requests for enhancements for EGEE platform to support Civil Protection applications – To prepare for future innovation and R&D projects Carry out perspective studies for future innovation and R&D projects

Define requests for enhancements for CP applications 1. Build a Grid infrastructure for Civil Protection – EGEE middleware is installed at the CP sites for test purposes 2. Study of Civil Protection framework integration with EGEE Grid middleware – Based on System Requirements analysis, a study is performed about the integration of the Civil Protection framework with the EGEE middleware – A preliminary activity to highlight weaknesses of current EGEE platform in supporting CP applications

Define requests for enhancements for CP applications 3. Study for a Civil Protection infrastructure to enhance EGEE middleware – Based on Business Process analysis results the needed EGEE extensions are analyzed – “EGEE Request for Enhancement” document released 4. Analysis of Civil Protection applications porting on the top of the new infrastructure – The possible implementation (porting) of existing Civil Protection applications on the enhanced EGEE infrastructure is analyzed

Carry out perspective studies for future innovation and R&D projects 1. Research Strategies definition – Research and innovation strategies investigated by expert groups made of members with expertise in – Civil Protection management – Geospatial Information Technologies – Grid technology – “Research Strategies for the development of a Civil Protection E-Infrastructure” report released 2. Innovation Strategies definition – “Toward a Grid - Guidelines for Innovation Strategies for Civil Protection Systems” report released
