Do any of these sound familiar? "Two wrongs don't make a right." "People who live in glass houses should not throw stones." "Don't bite the hand that feeds you." "Honesty is the best policy." "Don't count your chickens before they hatch." "If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.“ My personal favorite (although it’s much less common): “Not my monkeys, not my circus.”

Why is that? Are they really about glass houses, chickens, and monkeys (oh my!)? Why do people use these sayings? Where do they come from?

They’re proverbs. According to Wikipedia: “A proverb is a simple and concrete saying, popularly known and repeated, that expresses a truth based on common sense or the practical experience of humanity. [Proverbs] are often metaphorical.”

Connection to TFA: “Having spoken plainly so far, Okoye said the next half a dozen sentences in proverbs. Among the Ibo the art of conversation is regarded very highly, and proverbs are the palm-oil with which words are eaten” (Achebe 7). Analyze the proverb. Proverbs : Palm Oil Words : Food  Just as all good food as cooked with palm oil, all good conversation s are filled with proverbs. Rewrite the proverb (using modern equivalents). Proverbs are the chocolate that a message is dipped in.

Your task: Choose four proverbs from the provided list. For each: Analyze the proverb: what is the figurative meaning of this proverb to the I(g)bo culture? Rewrite the proverb: convey the same meaning using modern equivalents.
