Work Package 2 / 3 TECHNOLOGIAL & PROCEDURAL HARMONISATION FixO3 General Assembly 14 th to the 16 th October 2014, Heraklion-CRETE E2M3A, OGS Italy [P.I. Manuel Bensi,

WP 2 / WP3 – Technological & Procedural Harmonisation Task 2.1:Review of the current status of all fixed observing sites Task 3.1: Assessment of procedures Current status of the Observatory (October 2014) Position: Southern Adriatic (700km from OGS headquarter) Type: Multiple arrays (deep mooring and surface buoy) Payload-parameters: 1 ADCP uplooking (layer 100m-300m) 1 Current-meter (RCM-Seaguard) 7 CTDs (37 ; 37-ODO; SBE16 ) at different depths ( m) 2 Sediment traps ( m) Meteorological sensors pH and PCO2 (15m depth) People involved: 4 researchers + 7 technicians : Vanessa Cardin Laura Ursella Michele Giani Manuel Bensi Nevio Medeot Rajesh Nair Giuseppe Siena Fabio Brunetti Paolo Mansutti Alessandro Bubbi Stefano Kuchler OGS E2M3A ITALY

Significant results/highlights during the first year project 1.Three successfully maintenances performed (Nov13-Mar14-Sept14) 2.Real time transmission operative, TNA proposal received in July One journal paper published in 2014 (Bensi et al., AGU Books) 5.One quality check experiment performed at sea Data Management and Data Access REAL TIME: Data every 30 min. for the meteorological parameters. Data every 30 min. for pH sensor at 15m depth. Data every 1h for CTD plus oxygen sensor at 15m depth. Data every 4 hrs for CO 2 sensor at 15m depth. DELAYED MODE: Data every 1 h for all sensors with the exception of the CTD SBE16. Data every 3 hrs for the two SBE 16 sensors deployed at 320 and 720m depth on the subsurface mooring. Key persons involved in data management for your time-series: NODC OGS: Alessandra Giorgetti /Elena Partescano/Alessandro Altenburger/Alberto Brosich WP 2 / WP3 – Technological & Procedural Harmonisation Task 2.1:Review of the current status of all fixed observing sites Task 3.1: Assessment of procedures

Pre-deployment (procedures in short) Mooring Design and buoyancy calculation Maintenance/service issues planning (periodic/after failure) Calibration issues: Instrument calibration at OGS or at factory when required Preparations of all equipment and spare components Organization of stuff shipping, personnel travel, cruise plan WP 2 / WP3 – Technological & Procedural Harmonisation Task 2.1:Review of the current status of all fixed observing sites Task 3.1: Assessment of procedures Operating Scheme/Schematic (with time intervals) Pre-deployment: preparation of spare equipment (from 1 week to 2-3 months if specific tests are required). Deployment: recovery, cleaning, download data, quality check, re-deployment (3-5 days). On the field: position monitoring via Iridium beacon, real-data transfer, data post- processing (2-3 months)

Deployment (procedures in short) Ship/vessel used: R/V (if available), fishing ship, glider survey Maintenance on board: VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE SURFACE BUOY AT SEA VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE METEOROLOGICAL SENSORS RECOVERY AND INTRUMENTS CHECK OF THE SURFACE BUOY (REQUIRE ADEQUATE SHIP) RECOVERY OF THE SUB-SURFACE MOORING INTRUMENTS CLEANING DOWNLOAD DATA, BATTERY REPLACEMENTS, DATA QUALITY CHECK RE-DEPLOYEMENT Specific tests can be operated on board if time and meteo conditions permit. Check and/or replacement of damaged Kevlar rope parts and swivels before re-deployment. WP 2 / WP3 – Technological & Procedural Harmonisation Task 2.1:Review of the current status of all fixed observing sites Task 3.1: Assessment of procedures

On the field (procedures in short) Data transfer: Real time data transfer through the Globalstar Satellite Modem Surveys: CTD casts and or visual checks are performed by means of opportunity ships when available Emergencies: The position of the buoy is controlled with GPS and monitored by Iridium beacon (Short burst message) that transmits the position if the anchor line is accidentally severed Data post processing: quality-control, filtering, averaging, statistics, plots (MATLAB, instruments softwares). Data management: data archived at the NODC-OGS [ WP 3 – Procedural Harmonisation Task 3.1: Assessment of procedures
