Mechanics/machinists are critical In 2011, BAYWORK, a collaborative of water and wastewater utilities focused on workforce reliability, identified the following job categories as critical to getting their work done: Engineer Mechanic/Machinist Water Treatment Operator Electronic Maintenance Technician/Instrument Technician Electrician Water Distribution Operator Wastewater Treatment Operator

Average monthly salary range for mechanics/machinists Machinists/ Mechanics Apprentice Level Journey Level Supervisory Monthly Pay $4,100 - $5,100 $5,400 - $6,500 $6,000 - $8,200 The job description and salary range provided vary from utility to utility. The job description is an example for a larger utility and is based on San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) and East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD). The salary information is from the ‘Centers of Excellence Water and Wastewater Occupations’ publication for the Bay region, November 2009.
