Different routes into the ICT industry From School From College From University Through Modern Apprenticeships From Other Jobs Through personal route involving a mix of the above

What Can you Do At School To Help Research opportunities (jobs and courses) – develop Careers Management Skills using My World Of Work Arrange relevant work experience (this could include volunteering) Take on Leadership and Wider Achievement opportunities in the school that will help demonstrate and develop the key skills required to be successful in this field Visit relevant establishments – eg businesses, colleges, universities and talk to key people there Carefully consider subject choices (inc blended learning options – see next slide) Ensure that you do all you can to maximise your grades and qualifications (eg study techniques, attending help sessions, motivation for success…) Be AMBITIOUS yet REALISTIC

Blended Learning opportunities Software Design at Borders College – Nat4/5 Motor Vehicle Maintenance – Borders College Creative QMU Academy may be an appropriate option depending on type of career YASS courses include: Design Thinking and Engineering The Future Work Experience?

College Opportunities Borders College Borders College Courses Electrical Engineering - NC FT Electrical Engineering BEng/BEng (Hons) Electrical Engineering HNC FT Introduction to Engineering Skills Land-based Service Engineering: An Introduction - FT Vehicle Maintenance - Level 1 FT Vehicle Maintenance Level 2 FT

College Opportunities Edinburgh College Edinburgh College Courses – note from prospectus Within our engineering department we are able to offer you a broad curriculum. Edinburgh College is one of only three training centres for OPITO in the UK. Four years in a row a College apprentice has been named OPITO’s Apprentice of the Year. We offer study programmes within the following areas: Engineering Electrical Engineering Automotive Engineering Science

University Degrees – some examples Glasgow University – Civil Engineering with Architecture Civil Engineering with Architecture Stirling University – Software Engineering Software Engineering Edinburgh University – MSc Sustainable Energy Systems MSc Sustainable Energy Systems Heriot Watt University – Mechanical Engineering and Energy Engineering BEng Mechanical Engineering and Energy Engineering BEng Napier University – BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying Strathclyde University – Electronic and Electrical Engineering with Business Studies Electronic and Electrical Engineering with Business Studies Aberdeen University - Petroleum Engineering Go to www.ucas.com to look at all optionswww.ucas.com

Modern Apprenticeship Route Although there are no set entry requirements, as a general rule most employers will ask for three or more Standard Grades at general level (or National 4s) or above.
