Welcome to the world of VoIP By: Jaime Valles & Shady Mickhail

Our Presentation  Overview of VoIP  How does VoIP work  Detailed Explanation  Advantages and Disadvantages  Types of Implementation  Products  Summary

Overview (What is VoIP?)  Voice over Internet Protocol  Involves the delivery of voice information over  IP based networks. i.e. Internet  Used to transmit voice, fax, data and multimedia all in one network

How does VoIP Work?  Sends voice information in discrete digital packets rather than sending it through the public switched telephone network (PSTN).  Takes an analogue voice signal and converts it into a digital format so that it can be delivered over an IP network. i.e. Internet.  By using a router-based gateway, a PC-based gateway, a PBX-based gateway and others it can perform the conversion from an analogue signal to a digital format.

Detailed Explanation  PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) –POTS based on Circuit Switching –Today it is out of date –ISP’s pay for long distance access  VoIP takes advantage of this

Detailed Explanation  IP telephony –Packet switching using H.323 Standard –Bypass the PSTN through a Gateway Search Function Connection Digitizing Demodulation Compression Decompression and Remodulation

Advantages  No extra Phone Charge  Allows for multiple connections over a single line ex. Voice, fax, data, video.  Multiple users at the same time

Disadvantages  Initial set up cost  Quality issues  Compatibility issues

Types of Implementation  PC to Phone Service –Dialpad.com  PC to PC Service –NetMeeting  Phone to Phone Service –Telephone companies are able to reduce cost by 95% ex. Japan 29cents/min  Network Service

Products (Beamer)  Advantages –Enables you to instantly add video to you phone calls, simply by using your existing phone, and phone line. –No software to install, computer not required and no service fees  Disadvantages –Sends 15 frames per second –Actual speed is 33.6Kbps

Products (Beamer TV)  Advantages –Works with any television (NTSC format) that has a RCA video jack. Also, easy to set up and easy to use  Disadvantages –Modem transmission speed is 33.6Kpbs. –4 to15 frames per second –Retail Value for both products $ 

Summary  Positive Outlook  Concerns –Security –Bandwidth management  Advanced Technologies

Thank You!
