Networking Types of Internet Connection http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11864350

Dial-up ► Slowest and (usually) the most inexpensive. ► Allows you to connect to the internet using a standard 56k modem (56 Kbps). Your computer literally dials a phone number and connects to your ISP server.

Advantages of Dial-up ► Can be economic - the cost is per minute. ► widely available ► hardware costs are minimal. ► You only need a standard phone line.

Disadvantages of Dial-up ► Slow compared to other connection types. ► when connected to the internet the same phone line cannot be used for phone calls.

ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) ► Works by splitting your phone line into two separate channels, one for data and one for voice, therefore, you can be on the phone and the internet at the same time. ► Charge flat monthly fee – ► Usually between 2 & 25 Mbps

ADSL - Advantages ► Very fast download speeds ► Transfers data digitally, therefore no need to translate data from analogue to digital and vice versa. ► ADSL connections are always on – no connection time.

ADSL - Disadvantages ► Not available to everyone, need ADSL coverage in your area. ► Hardware costs are higher

Cable modem ► One of the best types of internet connection available to the home user, very fast and reliable connections with a fixed monthly fee. Uses Fibre Optic Cable to deliver television channels and Internet i.e. NTL

Cable modem - Advantages ► Very fast download speeds – theoretical maximum of 36Mbps ► Like ADSL connections, cable connections transfer data digitally, eliminating conversion overhead. ► Like ADSL, connections are Always on.

Cable modem - Disadvantages ► Cable connections are not available in every area.

ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) ► Provides two high speed lines each capable of running at 64Kbps (128Kbps) through existing phone network ► Transfers data digitally.

ISDN - Advantages ► Two phone lines – can be invaluable to a small business ► ISDN may be available in areas where ADSL is not.

ISDN - Disadvantages ► Additional hardware required – ISDN card ► Expensive compared with other types of connection

Leased Line ► A dedicated data line that connects companies to the internet. The user will have exclusive access to the leased line, meaning a guaranteed level of quality and speed – 1.5 to 274 Mbps ► Can be used to link two geographically distant arms of the same business and are always active.

Leased Line - Advantages ► Dedicated line – fast access and data transfer ► Secure connection – only one user

Leased Line - Disadvantages ► Expensive

Broadband ► DO NOT USE THE TERM ‘BROADBAND’ IN ANY EXAM ANSWER

Bandwidth ► This describes the amount of data that can be transferred ► Measured in bps (bits per second)
