Global Connections Read the caption and the introductory paragraph on pages In small groups, respond in writing to your two assigned questions from page 345 Looking Ahead

How Does Globalization Change Communities? What does the word community mean to you? Read all of page 346… See if any of your ideas of community were mentioned What virtual communities do you belong to? What kind of experiences have you had interacting with people from other cultures?

Transnational Corporations and Communities You have traveled to China to take in the culture and sites of this ancient civilization. You are especially looking forward to seeing the Great Wall of China. You are mostly looking forward to the visit because The Wall is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled areas in the country, and it has been a crucial part of the society for hundreds of years. On your way to the Great Wall, you pass by a busy area filled with stalls selling tourist souvenirs. A familiar symbol suddenly catches your eye, and you turn to see the golden arches of a McDonald’s restaurant amid all the unfamiliar sights. Close your eyes and listen…

Respond to the Following: From your point of view, would the McDonald’s restaurant be a comforting or irritating presence in this particular setting? Why or why not? From the perspective of an anthropologist ( someone who studies the social and cultural development of humans), would the presence of McDonald’s have a positive or negative effect on the community? Take a guess on how you think the people in the community feel about the presence of McDonald’s?

Effects of Corporate Globalization on Communities As you read all of page 347, fill in point-form notes onto a similar diagram as the one shown below: What are some other ways that globalization affects communities? Migration of people from other parts of the world?

The Effects of Immigration on Communities Read the top of page 348 and summarize the ideas in this section Why might economists believe that population growth is essential for a healthy economy?
