Prepared by Cooperative Programs Section & Associates NACO Training for OCLC Libraries

AACR2 & LCRI 25 Prepared by the Cooperative Programs Section & Associates Uniform Titles

Uniform Titles : Basic Concepts AACR2 Chapter 25 is optional for NACO membership! Uniform titles are used as a means of catalog management; therefore, uniform title policies are institution specific Contributed UT NARs must be in accord with LC/PCC’s policies and practices

Uniform Titles : Basic Concepts A means of bringing together all catalog entries for the same work Separate different works with the same title AACR2 25.1A

UT Basic Concepts Consistent title, no uniform title needed

UT Basic Concepts Once a variant title appears: Uniform title in the bibliographic record Authority record to offer access through the cross- reference

UT Basic Concepts : NAR Required 1)A reference must be traced on the authority record 2)Special research done to establish the heading must be recorded 3)The heading is needed for related work added entry or subject entry, and no bibliographic record for the work exists in the LC database (or, for serials, by a CONSER record in OCLC) DCM Z1, introd.

UT Basic Concepts : Bibliographic Record

UT Basic Concepts : Name Authority Record

UT Basic Concepts : Indexing Auth. Bibs: 6 Christie, Agatha, $t 4:50 from Paddington Bibs: 8Christie, Agatha, $t Evil under the sun Ref Bibs: 0 Christie, Agatha, $t Eye witness to murder Ref Bibs: 0 Christie, Agatha, $t Murder she said Ref. Bibs: 0 Christie, Agatha, $t What Mrs. McGillicuddy saw!

UT Basic Concepts : Number of NARs Not all units of a uniform title need to be represented by a NAR: e.g., when creating a NAR with sub elements, an additional NAR for the basic element (subfield $t) is not always needed _Christie, Agatha, $d $t Evil under the sun. $l Russian Requires two NAR’s and one bib record

Title main entry uses the 245 of the original to establish the uniform title (130) of the variant 245 Example of a bibliographic record with UT for which a NAR would NOT be made: Medical care and society _Medical care and society. $l Portuguese Assistência mêdica e sociedade. AACR2 25.2E1 UT Basic Concepts : No NAR

UT Basic Concepts : Indexing without NAR Bibs: 1Medical care and society Bibs: 1Medical care and society. $l Portuguese No NAR!

UT Basic Concepts : Indexing Bibs: 1Utrecht, Luuk. $t Rudi von Dantzig. Bibs: 1Utrecht, Luuk. $t Rudi von Dantzig. $l English

UT Basic Concepts : 670 Citation There is often less need for subfield $b in the 670 field of uniform title NARs e.g. Variant title justifying cross-reference would be in subfield $a of the 670 citation 670 _ _Smith, Nigel J. H. A pesca no Rio Amazonas, DCM Z1, 670 sect.

A. Use the title or form of title in the original language by which a work created after 1500 has become known through use in manifestations of the work or in reference sources. UT Basic Concepts : Choosing the Form
