Attention Getter Background Information (3-4 sentences) Thesis Statement Background Information Enlightenment Revolutionary War Articles of Confederation Thesis Statement Identification of branches (separation powers checks and balances)

Legislative (first body paragraph) Article I of the United States Constitution establishes the Legislative-or lawmaking- branch of the government. All legislative powers are granted to the United States Congress which consists of a Senate and a House of Representatives. Congress has the authority to enact laws and establish policies for the National Government

Executive (second body paragraph) Article II of the United States Constitution establishes the Executive or, law-enforcing,branch of the government. The executive powers are granted to the President of the United States. The President has the authority to carry out, administer, and enforce the policies for the national government.

Judicial (third body paragraph) Article III of the United States Constitution establishes the Judicial, or law-interpreting, branch of government. The judicial power of the United States is vested in one Supreme Court and in such inferior courts as the Congress may from time to time ordain and establish.

Separation of Powers (fourth body paragraph) The division of governmental powers among separate branches is known as Separation of Powers. This was because the framers of the Constitution wanted a strong central government. At the same time, they feared individuals or large groups might acquire or stay in power too long. To prevent the concentration of power in the hands of the few, delegates adopted the concept of Separation of Powers.

Checks and Balances (fifth body paragraph) While making the three branches of government separate, the framers also wanted to be sure that no one branch could act completely with out restraints. Therefore, the framers set up a system of Checks-and-Balances. Under this system, each branch of government exercises some control over the other two. The system of Checks-and-Balances prevents the accumulation of too much power in any one branch of government.
