Imperialism and India Great Britain took interest in India in the 1600s.

Discussion Question Initially in the 1700’s Great Britain valued India’s potential, but during the Age of Imperialism they became Britain’s pride and joy, what changed?

East India Company The British East India Company governed, regulated trade, the economy, and society from within India and reported back to Great Britain. (Mercantilism)

Sepoys The East India company had its own military. The Soldiers were called Sepoys.

Sepoys The sepoys usually practiced either the Hindu or Muslim faiths.

British Control of India India produced raw materials for Great Britain only, no one else was allowed to trade for Indian goods. (Trade Monopoly)

British Trade Networks Great Britain used India to gain natural resources like indigo, coffee, cotton, jute, and opium. Britain then traded the items for profit.

British Control of India India could only purchase goods and materials from Great Britain, no one else.

British Control of India Britain then forced India to buy manufactured goods from them, whether they needed them or not.

Positive Impact India eventually had the third largest railroad network in the world.

Negative Impacts India produced less food and more raw materials to keep Great Britain happy. Furthermore, India was not allowed to industrialize.

More Negative Effects: Tension... Indians despised British missionaries. India became increasingly dissatisfied with British rule.

Rumor! The new cartridges that Britain supplied the Sepoys with allegedly had a casing made of cow and pig fat.

Sepoy Resentment Sepoys had to bite the cartridges to get to the bullets. – Muslims do not eat pork – Hindus believe the cow is sacred.

The next day… A British commander delivered the cartridges to 90 Sepoys who refused to accept them. The British responded by throwing them in jail.

The Sepoy Mutiny: __57 The Sepoys stage a Mutiny or rebellion against the East India Company and Great Britain.

Mutiny: A military uprising

Direct Result of the Sepoy Mutiny Great Britain takes direct strict control of India in 1858 and does not let go until 1947.

Suez Canal: 1869

Indirect Result of Sepoy Mutiny India had to come together to challenge Britain’s rule and authority, you might say that Indian ____________ increased.
