Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü Toulouse, February 2, 2012 “The Organization of the EUSO- Balloon mission” Andrea Santangelo * Kepler Center for Astro and Particle Physics, Eberhard-Karls-Universität, Tübingen, Advanced Studies Institute, Riken, Wako EUSO Balloon Phase A Review

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü Preamble This talk describes the key points of the EUSO Balloon instrument Organization. All details on the topic can be found in the “Organization Note of the EUSO-Balloon Instrument” EUSO-ON-INST-201-LAL.

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü Preamble (2) The EUSO Balloon mission has been proposed by a consortium of three French Laboratories members of the JEM-EUSO international collaboration: The EUSO Balloon mission is fully supported by the JEM-EUSO collaboration

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü EUSO Balloon The EUSO Balloon mission is conceived as a pathfinder of the JEM-EUSO mission and of the challenging technique of observing UHE CR from space It should perform: –End-to-end tests of the subsytems and components of the JEM-EUSO mission. –To prove the global detection chain. –To improve our understanding the atmospheric and terrestrial UV background. –It might detect for the first time a cosmic shower from above.

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü Key facts (1) CNES is in charge of the mission and leads and supervises the mission development CNES supports the French contribution to the instrument and the French participation to the development of the mission The French Institutes of the consortium shall deliver the Instrument for the flights.

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü The role of the JEM-EUSO Consortium The JEM-EUSO collaboration provides a complete and dedicated support to the definition and building of all necessary subsystems, components and sub-assembly items of the Instrument Countries and Institutions are responsible for all items according to their responsibilities in the JEM-EUSO mission The development is under the management and responsibility of the French team in coordination with the JEM-EUSO management.

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü EUSO Balloon Management

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü Principal Investigator (PI, Peter Von Ballmoos) The PI defines the scientific program and the specification of the mission in coordination with the JEM-EUSO management (PI P. Picozza, Deputy PI T. Ebisuzaki, Global Coordinator A. Santangelo) and the JEM-EUSO Instrument scientist Bertaina. The PI, with the PM, ensures compliance between the system and mission specifications and the Instrument technical specifications and verifies that they are properly taken into account by the technical project team

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü Project Manager (PM, Sylvie Dagoret-Campagne) The PM is responsible of the overall instrument technical performances, of the schedule, the costs and the coordination of all the activities –Organizes technical work, manages the interfaces (also with the Gondola) –Coordinates the technical work on the EUSO-Balloon within the JEM-EUSO collaboration in coordination with the JEM-EUSO management –Defines tasks, sets up schedules, checks the results, handles the delays in one word ensures the compliance to the schedule

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü Project Manager (2) Interfaces the CNES –Follows the various project procedures –Organizes regular meetings and milestone reviews –Organizes the preparation of the documentation needed in each development phase The Project Manager interfaces and is supported by the JEM- EUSO key persons: -Direct Interface: M. Casolino JEM-EUSO Project scientist -K. Tsuno, JEM-EUSO project manager -A. Santangelo, JEM-EUSO Global coordinator

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü System Manager (SM) Is responsible for the development of the Instrument compliance with the technical specifications. –Responsible for the instrument configuration and for the management of the external and internal interfaces –He reports and assists the PM and is assisted by the Architects

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü Architect(s) (P. Von Ballmoos, G. Medina-Tanco) P. Von Ballmoos is the architect for the Mechanics; G. Medina-Tanco for the thermal aspects. The architects are responsible for the mechanical and thermal configuration of the Instrument They are responsible for the preparation of the documentation relative to the internal and external thermal and mechanical interfaces They report to and assist the SM.

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü Component Managers There are three component managers: –Optics (TLE): T. Ebisuzaki –Photo Detector Module (PDM): M. Casolino –Data processing: G. Osteria They are responsible for the design, production, integration and testing of the components in compliance with the Instrument specifications and the external and internal interfaces.

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü Sub-assembly Responsabilities have been identified Such a large international collaboration requires a clear distribution of responsibilities also at the sub-assebly level:

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü For each element both a management responsible and a technical contact person have been identified

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü Organization in France (1) In bold persons involved in management tasks at project level or at group-laboratory level

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü Organization in France (2)

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü Key items of the Working Process (1) Along the development of the instrument all relevant documentation will be written (or updated) under the responsibility of the person in charge of the subsystem/component and will be approved by the PM and the PI. Documentation will be forwarded to CNES by the PI and PM

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü Key items of the Working Process (2) A series of meeting is foreseen to monitor the process: –Project meetings on a weekly basis called by the PM –Formal meeting with CNES (monthly basis) To review technical progress, on-going actions, planning, critical points –Specific meetings of the instrument planning: PRR, PDR, PK –Internal Laboratories meeting

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü A recent change in the management Co -PI A. Santangelo (IAAT) To ensure a strong coordination with and a fast reaction from the JEM- EUSO collaboration. Along the same line P. Von Ballmoos has been coopted in the JEM-EUSO Executive Committee

Andrea Santangelo, Kepler Center-Tü Conclusions The proposed structure can of course be updated following the suggestion of the committee… The EUSO Balloon is fully included in the JEM- EUSO roadmap. The EUSO consortium is fully committed to the EUSO Balloon activity: key persons of JEM- EUSO are taking concrete responsibilities. Most important: the team has on the shoulders more that 6 years (in some case 8 and in some 10) of effective, cooperative and pleasant and harmonic collaboration!
