Discussion on Milestone and schedule Toshiyuki Okugi ATF2 commissioning meeting 1 / 7 / 2009

Milestones ? Presented by Andrei Serry

Comments by Philip Burrows IN GENERAL I THINK ANDREI'S DRAFT MILESTONES ARE ADMIRABLY AMBITIOUS. IT IS GOOD TO BE AGGRESSIVE, BUT ONE MUST ALSO BE REALISTIC, AND CERTAINLY HAVE CONTINGENCY PLANS IN CASE OF (INEVITABLE) DIFFICULTIES. PERSONALLY I WILL BE VERY IMPRESSED IF WE ACHIEVE A BEAM SIZE OF < 100 NM BY THE END OF I WONDER IF WE SHOULD CONSIDER, AS AN ALTERNATIVE OR BACKUP, A 'LESS AGGRESSIVE' SET OF MILESTONES, WITH THE AIM OF 100NM BEAM SIZE BY END 2009? WE WILL THEN HAVE A CHANCE TO LAY SOUND FOUNDATIONS FOR MOVING ON IN 2010 TO TRY TO ACHIEVE 37NM BY END I THINK THE NM-LEVEL BEAM STABILISATION MAY HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL Comments for Milestone Discussion Aggressive milestone ? Aggressive milestone (official) with backup ? Realistic milestone ?

1. Beam Monitors Stripline BPM - We will calibrate the BPM readout electronics in this winter shutdown. - The monitor will be ready at the beginning of February C-band and S-band Cavity BPM - fully operating system (at high resolution) by the end of February detail study for the cavity BPMs will be started from March Extraction line wire scanners - Hardware of 3 wire scanners (MW1X, MW3X, MW4X) are ready. - We will try to repair the MW0X and MW2X in this winter shutdown. - We need one shift to identify which wire is X, Y, U,... with beam. Post IP wire scanner and carbon wire scanner - Hardware and software check will be done by the end of January Hardware commissioning will be started from February Hardware Preparations

2. IP-BSM ( Shintake monitor ) 1 st Step ; Laser wire mode - estimation and reduction of the beam background - establish the laser-beam collision - the study will restart from February nd Step ; 2 and 8 degree modes - System check by comparing with carbon wire scanners. - Laser optics preparation will be started from February the beam study will started after laser wire mode 3 rd Step ; 30 and 174 degree modes - dynamic range of 30 degree mode is 80nm -300nm. - dynamic range of 174 degree mode is 25nm -100nm. - Laser optics preparation will be started from March or April the beam study will started after 2 and 8 degree modes. Hardware Preparations Beam size measurement

3. Magnets QM7R.1 - QM7R.1 will be replaced at the end of January QM7R.2 will not be replaced. QS2X - The device will be ready at the beginning of February QK2X, QK3X - The devices will be ready at the beginning of October Hardware Preparations Schedules for oversea collaborator ( Short visit ) Mark W. : Feb 11 to Mar 7 Glen W. : Feb 21 to Mar 14 Steve M. : Mar 4 to Mar 14 (from RHUL) Andrei S.:~Feb 22 to ~March 16

February – March 2009 Beam time ( 5 weeks, 60 shifts ) DR optics diagnostics DR emittance tuning DR storage ( Extraction kicker aperture, QM7R check ) ATF2 beam time Priority studies are hardware related works Calibration of BPM and BBA (EXT and FF) Commissioning of carbon wire scanner Optics modeling and magnet strength test with beam Physical alignment check with beam ( kicker, chamber, … ) Commissioning of IP-BSM Beam tuning developments Beta matching from DR to EXT ( check of QM7R ) Coupling correction with 2 skew quads Dispersion correction Beam size tuning with carbon wire Slow orbit feedback Beta matching from EXT to FF Orbit tuning and beam transport with small loss 2/2 - 2/16 - Wire search for EXT wire scanners 2/2 - 2/16 - 2/2 - ATF beam time to achieve 24pm emittance

Comments for Beam Schedules Comments by Philip Burrows KEK outside collaborator connection to daily meeting IT WOULD BE GOOD TO ENGAGE AS MANY MEMBERS OF THE COLLABORATION AS POSSIBLE IN CONTRIBUTING TO THESE PROGRESS REPORTS AND PLANNING DISCUSSIONS. IN DECEMBER I SAW THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO CONNECT TO THE DAILY 4.30 MEETING - COULD SOMEONE SEND CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO DO THIS? WEEKLY MEETINGS - MY (OBVIOUS) SUGGESTION IS TO SET A DRAFT SCHEDULE FOR BLOCKS OF 1 WEEK OF COMMISSIONING PERIODS FOR THE NEXT 2-3 MONTHS. I WOULD SUGGEST REVIEWING THE RESULTS ON A WEEKLY BASIS - POSSIBLY ON FRIDAYS, TO REVIEW THE PREVIOUS WEEK - AND THEN ADJUSTING THE SCHEDULE FOR THE FOLLOWING WEEK(S), ALLOWING THE WEEKEND FOR PEOPLE TO RECOVER AND PREPARE, WITH BEAM RESUMING ON MONDAY. (I AM ASSUMING THE USUAL MONDAY-FRIDAY BEAM SCHEDULE). - IS SOMEWHAT EARLY. IS THERE ANY CHANCE TO MAKE IT 30 MINUTES OR ONE HOUR LATER? - I DO WONDER IF HAVING THE COMMISSIONING MEETINGS MID-WEEK IS OPTIMAL? I SUGGEST THAT EACH WEEKLY SHIFT PERIOD SHOULD BE ASSIGNED SOME DESIGNATED 'BACKUP' PLAN IN CASE OF HARDWARE OR OTHER DIFFICULTIES. EG. IF THE MAIN PROGRAMME IS IN THE EXTRACTION LINE, HAVE A BACKUP PLAN FOR WORK UPSTREAM, OR IN THE DAMPING RING (I KNOW THIS IS OBVIOUS).

Comments by Urakawa-san (about training) We’d better to have some kind of training shift for ATF operation. - how often ? - what kind of training ( present ATF control system? flight simulator? ) ?
