Services Chapter 12

Service: any activity that fulfills a human want or need andreturns money to those whoprovide it.

Examples:

MDC or LDC?? Most people in MDCs work in the tertiary/ service sector Small number of people work in factories/farms, primary and secondary sector.

Where Are Services? Settlement: permanent collection of buildings where people reside, work, and obtain services. Services are located in settlements Range in size: tiny rural villages to large cities Settlements occupy under 1% of earths surface, but are home to nearly allhumans…why? Large cities offer a larger scale of services than small towns

Why Are Services in Settlements? Proximity to the market!!! Optimal location for a service is near its customers. Three critical factors in selecting a suitable site for service jobs: “Location, location, location”

Thought… If services need to be near people, why does the USA have more services than say China and India?

Answer: Cluster in MDCs because more people ARE ABLE TO BUY SERVICES here.

Globalization Types of services is increasingly uniform from one urban settlement to another Every urban settlement in USA above a certain size has a branch of a large retail chain…McDonalds, Macy’s, Apple. Created connections among settlements Local Diversity Some services cluster in a specific settlement i.e. an advertising agency, film studio, type of restaurant. Every settlement offers distinct services that attract tourists and visitors.
